ESPN is reporting today that Juice Williams has been benched in favor of Eddie McGee, following Juice’s 1-3 start this season. After seeing the hype and love Juice Williams got early in his career this comes as a bit of a shock, even if he was putting up fairly pedestrian stats: 51/89 for 519 yards, 1 TD and 4 INTs through the air and 49 carries for 152 yards and 1 TD on the ground. Definitely not the sorts of numbers you want your starting quarterback putting up.
Compare to Pryor’s current stats (over 5 games): 66/114 for 854 yards, 8 TD’s and 5 INTs through the air, and 55 carries for 298 yards and 3 TDs on the ground. And we’ve been complaining that he still has growing to do. Ouch…
Juice Williams has underperformed for years, with his only big flash coming against the Buckeyes in 2007. This is perhaps a move that comes far too late for poor Ron Zook, who may be looking at the end of his career here shortly.
Honestly, Zook could find a magic bullet that allows him to win every game from here on out this season and he would *still* probably lose his job.
McGee is also running better stats than Williams is right now – not surprisingly. We’ll just have to see how he performs next week against Michigan State. May not be the best defense in the world, but it should still give him a better test than 2nd team defenses of the world.
Or maybe the Zooker is just writing off this season already. Think about it. The Illini are 1-3 and they still have lose-able games on the schedule.
MSU (Toss-up)
@ IU (Toss-up)
@ PU (Probable Win)
Michigan (Probable Loss)
@ MN (Toss-up)
Northwestern (Toss-up)
@ Cincinnati (Likely Loss)
Fresno State (Probable Win)
Worst case (duh) 1-11, best case (only lose to Cincinnati) 9-3. Most likely case 5-7.
Not making a bowl game is definitely in the cards for the Illini. Frankly, they better beat MSU this weekend or I see IU and PU being losses for Illinois. When Illinois fails…they don’t do it half assed.

Zooker is treading water at the reservation and needs to do ANYTHING to turn this season around and keep his job.

I appears that getting ‘Zooked’ is sweeping thru the national college football landscape faster than H1N1…
