Ohio State exorcises BCS demons, wins Rose Bowl 26-17

The monkey is off the proverbial back.  Jim Tressel and the Ohio State Buckeyes have returned to BCS glory.

The Buckeyes dominated the Oregon Ducks 26-17 in their first Rose Bowl this century, riding the arm and the legs of sophomore sensation Terrelle Pryor.  Pryor was named the Rose Bowl MVP after throwing 23 of 37 for 266 yards and 2 touchdowns.  He also rushed 20 times for 72 yards, giving him a total for 338 all-purpose yards.

Ohio State fans have grown accustomed to seeing a restrained Pryor throughout his career, with Tressel keeping his talents tamped down into a style commonly known as "Tresselball".  Apparently, that was last decade.  The leash was taken off Pryor and he turned in a shining performance from start to finish.

"We knew everything they were going to do, with their blitzes.  I just wanted to come out and show I can be a complete quarterback."

- Terrelle Pryor

The win snaps a 6-game BCS losing streak for the Big Ten (three of which belonged to the Buckeyes) and shocked an overconfident Oregon squad which refused to give the Ohio State defense their due.

That Buckeye defense held Oregon to 260 total yards, a full 164 yards below their season average.  They also kept the Ducks to 21 points below their average.  Whether or not the respect will follow remains to be seen.

Star-divide

Ohio State shocked everyone, especially their own fans, when they opened the game with 6 straight pass plays.  The opening drive (which included only one designed rushing play) gave the Bucks a 7-0 lead on a 13-yard TD pass from Pryor to Brandon Saine.

Later in the quarter, the Pryor-Saine connection continued with a beautiful touch-pass for 47 yards down the right sideline, just over the Oregon defense.  Four plays later, Ohio State extended their lead to 10-0 on a short Devin Barclay field goal.

Just 14 minutes into the game, Ohio State led in total offense 159 yards to 14.  Ducks Nation was officially set on stun, but they were not going to go away so quietly.

Oregon followed with a quick-strike drive, eating up 52 yards in just 6 plays that led to a 24-yard Morgan Flint field goal and trimming the deficit to 10-3.  Quickly, the Ducks were regrouped and they made Ohio State pay on the next possession when LeGarrette Blount scored on a 3-yard rush through the right side and a 10-10 tie.

With serious momentum and an energized crowd on their side, Oregon began to emerge as the favorite they were hyped as.  But that's when the MVP stepped in.

Pryor took the ensuing possession and engineered a 19-play drive foir a field goal that recaptured the lead 13-10.  He completed 7 of 10 passes for 36 yards in typical Big Ten style...short plays, time-consuming successful drives.  Linebacker Ross Homan would pick off a Jeremiah Masoli pass soon after, and the Bucks would extend their lead just before halftime to 16-10 on a FG as time expired.

Masoli, who had been touted as a dominating presence at QB, was unable to get his game on track in the first half as he accounted for just 49 yards passing and a mere 4 yards rushing.  The second half would be just as brutal to him.

The Ducks took the second half kickoff and drove down the field for the touchdown that gave Oregon their only lead of the game, 17-16.  Masoli took the ball in from one yard out, but it was the last time they would see the end zone.  A third Barclay FG reclaimed the lead for Ohio State at 19-17 and Blount countered by fumbling his next carry back to the Buckeyes.  Oregon never found their swagger again.

Well, they found their swagger between every play, celebrating the most mundane of accomplishment.  But on the actual field, their success was limited.

Pryor put the game out of reach when he found WR DeVier Posey on a 17-yard pass in the left corner of the end zone.  Ohio State led 26-17 after the 13-play, 81-yard drive in the 4th quarter.

Additional notes

  • Oregon's loss followed suit with their other two failures in 2009.  Both Stanford and Boise State dominated time of possession and rushed the ball over 50 times in their wins over the Pac-10 champions.  Ohio State did the same, carrying the ball 51 times and eating up 41:37 minutes of the clock.
  • Masoli ended his day with just 90 yards of total offense (81 passing, 9 rushing)
  • FG kicker Aaron Pettrey made his return for the Buckeyes after suffering a nasty knee injury 9 weeks ago.  He nailed a 45-yard field goal just before halftime to signal his return...and his departure as a graduating senior.
  • Posey had 8 catches for the game, one shy of his career high.
  • WR Dane Sanzenbacher had a career-high 9 catches, mostly in a ball-control mode.
  • TE Jake Ballard had the play of the game, as far as I'm concerned.  Yeah, you know the play.  Nuff said.
  • Mark May was finally forced to shut the f up, but still managed to say "let's see if he can do that again next year."  What an ass.
  • Blount managed to leave the L.A. Coliseum without any assault charges being filed against him.  Kudos on his improvement in losing gracefully.
  • The Big Ten improved to 3-2 in bowl games with Iowa and Michigan State upcoming.
  • The Pac-10 now takes over the "overrated conference" mantle, going 2-5 in bowls.  Their only wins came against Boston College and Temple.
  • Ohio State faced a total of five teams that finished with a 10-win season in 2009-2010 (Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin, Navy, and Oregon).  The Buckeyes went 5-0 in those games.
  • Oregon faced two 10-win teams in 2009-2010.  Boise State was the other 10-win opponent, and Oregon lost both games.
  • Pryor ended 2009-2010 with a 3-0 record against teams that were heavy in the running for his services.  Wins over Penn State, Michigan and Oregon finished his sophomore year (with a win over Iowa thrown in for good measure).

Straight Up Those Quack Guys thought they were judge and jury!

Honestly, I appreciate that those guys tried to keep the level of discussion higher than our team is better than yours, but at the end of every argument, they would point to some clipboard of “facts” that they took as PROOF OF EMINNENT DUCK DOMINATION OVER OSU and be dumbfounded that we had the audacity to try and compete!

I recall being told I don’t understand football very much because time of possession is an old stat that does not really indicate anything anymore….

Time of Possession

Ohio State: 41:37
Ducks: 18:23

From Addicted to Quack back before Christmas!!!!

http://www.addictedtoquack.com/2009/12/9/1193202/media-wednesday-scouting-the-enemy#26918116

Bobo Said “….speaks to how Tressel approaches a game and his system. If Ohio State scores 30 the time of possession is going to be so lopsided, you’ll wonder why Masoli was never on the field.”

JShufelt said “I hope you really aren’t offended with we laugh at this idea. Time of Possession really has no important to us. We’ve consistently have been one, or the worst in "Time of Possession" in the country for the last 3 years, but when it comes to scoring, we’ve been in the top 10.”

Jtlight said – “With hurry up offenses, ….., and it is a fairly insignificant indicator now days.” and later “More plays = more chances to score. More time = more chances to take a nap”

How did you sleep last night?

Yes, I gloat a bit, only because I took it on the nose on this point. A lot was said and I don’t think its important to go back and weigh every point. The game solved all arguments for now. Still on this time of possession nonsense I need to speak.

If you want to be consistently in the TOP 5, as the Ducks have potential to be with the way things are heading, this has to change. You don’t beat Texas, Florida, and Ohio State and other repeat offenders in the BCS games by ceding a huge time of possession advantage to the opponent before kickoff.

by Buckeye Bobo on Jan 2, 2010 1:43 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

Here was my actual quote:

Another note on TOP. It used to be an indicator of who controlled the ball and ran more plays. With hurry up offenses, that is no longer the case, and it is a fairly insignificant indicator now days. Total plays, first downs, etc. are much more important.

I still stand by that. TOP is being overstated in this case. The real culprit for OSUs win was the fact that they had 89 plays to Oregon’s 53, and had 26 first downs to Oregon’s 12.

by jtlight on Jan 2, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes yes

there is a lot more going on here… football is complicated. However, as a general indicator its a mistake to call it insignificant!

by Buckeye Bobo on Jan 2, 2010 2:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I guess what I’m saying is that if you were gonna just look at a box score to figure out who played the best in the game, one of the first places I’m gonna be going is to look is total plays and first downs. TOP won’t be up there, because it is very dependent on these two, and does not also take into account differences in pace between the two teams.

Oregon dominated USC this season. They had 80 plays to 67, and 31 first downs to 17. Yet, they only had 31 minutes in time of possession. In my mind, these two previous metrics are the real way to tell which team controlled the ball, not time of possession.

--AddictedToQuack, SBNation's Oregon Ducks blog

by jtlight on Jan 2, 2010 2:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

True

Can’t argue with that.

Whenever I made a case for controlling TOP, I always coupled it with “must rush the ball 50+ times”. Those two combined were the difference maker, in my mind.

Of course, you really can’t rush it 50+ times unless you’re leading in the 4th quarter. Or you’re Navy.

"I got a fever! And the only prescription is Kurt Coleman!"

by Jeff at the BBC on Jan 2, 2010 6:23 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll still stand by my argument against TOP.

Ohio State didn’t win because they had more Time of Possession. They won because they had more plays and first downs. TOP is not always indicative of that.

Ohio State isn’t the first team to dominate Oregon in TOP, and they won’t be the last.

Getting Back to Basics....

Check out my original post from your Quack page on the December 10. My thoughts on time of possession were never that it is a stand alone statistic, rather that if you let Tressel score about 30, his overall scheme will overwhelm you. I chose TOP as the best indicator of that, yes plays run is important too, as is 3rd down, rush yards, etc….

Terrelle Pryor's 'Vince Young moment'?

Everyone likes to compare TP’s career trajectory to Vince Young. Although what Vince Young did in the Rose Bowl is in a rarified class all by itself, his first Rose Bowl was what launched him and Texas for their 2005 NC run.

Anyone see any similarities between VY and TP here, or is it just me?

Thank you Buckeyes for the dominating (Tressel version) win

I live in Portland, Oregon, and have made my Buckeye affiliations well known. No one here thought Ohio State would win, and about 3/4ths of the people I talked to thought it would be a blow out. My life would have been miserable for the next few months with gloating Oregon fans infesting my life, but now I get to look upon them with silent pride, not even having to say anything, as they know their program has to grow up to compete with the big boys.

Thanks...

for the welcome jtlight. We’ve already really started to enjoy being here, and I think it’s great to be a part of such a great community of bloggers like this!

Pryor surprised us all tonight, I think. He played hands down the best football game I’ve seen from him so far, and possibly one of the best games of this bowl season for a quarterback. Nothing but good decisions the whole game for the most part.

Your special teams play, and the play of Masoli, James and Blount put you guys in a position to be successful. I came away very impressed by how good Oregon looked – despite some of my incoming preconceived notions (thank you Arizona). I would lay decent money that Oregon is on the shortlist of teams to make the MNCG next year.

by Eric at the BBC on Jan 2, 2010 2:40 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Good points, Eric, about..

.. James and Blount, they looked pretty good. Masoli, not so much, pretty average last night. IMO, the ‘killer’ player for Oregon was K. Barner. Wow, is that kid ever a playmaker. I think with these guys coming back, Oregon’s scoerboard operator better make sure the lights are working.

SO my second Buckeye live game ever, I get to see it with my Dad, we win the rose bowl, and in doing so kick the OSU chokes in big games meme right out the window; and as an added (albeit unknown at the time) bonus my wife and son snuck into the game to catch the end of the 4th quarter! Terrelle looked amazing, the line play on both sides of the ball was absolutely stellar, and we had three generations of Buckeye pride sharing the moment.
Without a doubt I will remember this day forever and ever.

I love it!

Block O Nation predicted a score of 24-17, and the Oregon fans swamped him….openly mocking him for calling a 17-point total for Oregon.

“Hahahahaha. Oregon only scoring 17 points? You buckeye fans are in for a long day if you think thats going to happen. Good luck. Go Trojans!”

“17 points? less than half the Ducks average? Put down the crack pipe…hurry.”

“Ohio States Defense will get spread out and picked apart by oregons Spread offense attack. There is a reason we averaged 40 points a game in the Pac-10. Pac-10 always beats itself up because of the type of schedule they run and thats why we never get national recognition because the stupid fucked up BCS system looks at records not schedule strength.”

“Do you dickeyes not understand, Pryor runs outta bounds while Masoli runs over people.”

It goes on and on, and it’s hilarious….

Listen, every team has their share of idiot fans. Ohio State certainly has plenty and they give the rest of us a bad name. I’m sure there are plenty of Buckeyes fans acting like jerks on message boards so I don’t think we need to reprint all the idiot posts from Oregon fans in order to gloat about our victory. By doing this, aren’t we just stooping to their level? Let’s just celebrate our victory and not worry about what other fans or the media thinks.

I don't think it's gloating about the victory

more like defending our pre game analysis (good defense beats good offense and so on) that was mocked by Oregon fans who bought into the ESPN hype of an Ohio State team that can’t handle speed and on and on

perhaps in the future opposing fans will spend a little less time believing the ESPN hype machine and start giving Ohio State a little more respect

T. Pryor

Masoli ‘ran over’ Ohio State for a grand total of 9 yards, Pryor was a better QB in every single facet of the game last night

You have mistaken the term "running over" entirely.

This is running over a defensive back.

No one said Masoli ran over your defense last night. Masoli as a quarterback literally runs over teams. That’s opposed to running around them.

Jim at the BBC did.

And there have been some freshly deleted trolls at ATQ tearing down Masoli after his first bad game in two months. I said nothing in the way of Masoli quote “running over the OSU defense”, because he didn’t. I’d rather not have a slew of tOSU fans dissing on me for explaining what kind of QB Masoli is. Honestly, we simply couldn’t get the ball in Masoli’s hands yesterday, and good on the Ohio State coaching staff for preventing that.

Masoli is a beast. Perfect QB for high octane Oregon’s offense.

It took the best defense in the nation to make him have his first bad game in months.

by Simmsinns on Jan 2, 2010 7:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

To be honest, Pryor and Dixon are way more suited to Oregon's offense than Masoli is.

Height has played a huge role in his interceptions this year. Four of his last five interceptions this year (including last night’s) have been tipped at the line. Very frustrating. It’s forced us to move to some 5-wide formations which I don’t think work very well. Whatever. I love him as a quarterback anyway!

but I think that maybe some people are reading “he runs out of bounds” as “he is a pussy and Masoli is a tough guy”. If Pryor were a RB,lTHEN he might be subject for criticism when running out of bounds, but he is a QB so I think it’s smart for him to avoid as much contact as possible. It’s not in his or the team’s best interest for him to lower his shoulder on someone. God knows we don’t want him injured and thus do not want Joe Bauserman taking snaps any time soon or ever.

Some of the O-live commentors might have meant that.

Taken at face value, Masoli runs over and Pryor runs around. Pryor is way more like Dennis Dixon than Masoli was. That’s why we recruited him.

He runs about a 4.6 or so.

A huge part of his game is taking advantage of the misdirected defenses. That’s why Oregon’s zone reads are so stellar. They didn’t work yesterday, but over the course of the past three years they’ve been the Oregon football trademark, if you will. If he gets the ball on the edge, he rarely beats a guy. Again, great speed for a QB. Mediocre speed and agility for a RB.

right

he might get picked up late rounds or as a free agent, who knows.

i think part of the reason your zone read, etc didn’t work was that it has become a familiar offense for OSU. “We” run some of those type of plays here and there and the sinking ship that is the SS RRod up North also runs that now.

by SouthBayBuckeye on Jan 2, 2010 8:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

The big key was forcing the 3rd and longs. Which of course came down to being disciplined on 1st and 2nd down and knowing who had that ball and not letting them hit the outside.

by Simmsinns on Jan 2, 2010 8:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think what happened is that we simply didn't pass well enough to set it up.

Believe you me, the most familiar of defenses cannot handle it when they have to worry about the downfield pass. That’s how we beat USC. I think you guys executed well enough to make Masoli give it off. Our offensive line was not holding their own. Your sacks were huge in getting Masoli uncomfortable.

I’m totally with Jtlight on this one, it is Pryor’s talent and build that allows him to throw off defenders like that. When you try to take away from Oregon’s D, you take away from the accomplishment of Terrelle Pryor.

What was really impressive about these, is that he just threw the defenders off like they were flies. The height, strength, and long arms make it very tough to tackle Pryor when he knows the defender is coming.

I lol'ed at "every time Kelly hit the X button on the controller"

classic.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that a lack of tradition is the reason there were obnoxious drunk under-25 Oregon fans…unless every under-25 person attending Ohio State-Michigan comports themselves with perfect decorum, I think it’s a lot more likely that when you get college-age kids liquored up, they act like jackasses. Saying otherwise is an indictment of a good program because of the behavior of some louts, and every fan base has louts, so that’s no fair.

With regards to the game, wowza. Oregon couldn’t get off the field on third down on defense and couldn’t convert their own third downs on offense, and OSU deserves tremendous credit for that. Pryor was unbelievable. I felt like I was watching a rematch of the Texas-USC NC game where every single time it looked like a Trojan had Young wrapped up, he escaped to make a huge play with his arm or his legs. And the road graders that comprise your offensive line did a good job in the run game — every 3rd and 2, 4th and 1 the Ducks had no chance to stop the run.

Defensively I was incredibly impressed with the speed of your linebacking corps. The Ducks have made a living this year on the stretch run off tackle and relying on the initial misdirection (to get the LBs moving out of position) and then the speed of the running backs to take advantage of that poor positioning. Your front 7 did a very good job of reading the gaps and playing disciplined pursuit defense, and the couple of times they broke down they recovered incredibly quickly. The Ducks did way too much east-west running and not nearly enough north-south running, and that was to OSU’s credit.

The better team won yesterday. The Ducks had a chance and hung tough but just didn’t make enough plays to win — the play of the quarterbacks sort of symbolizes the difference in performance between the two teams. Congrats to Ohio State and enjoy being the Rose Bowl champs, you earned it.

These Oregon Clowns are into their flashy football uniforms and low class Behavior and they do not have the word “Class” anywhere in their vocabulary .
Since they have only won one Rose Bowl 93 years ago (1917) they have no other traditions than losing and acting like idiots. If they are looking for tradition they should wear the same uniforms from 1917 instead of these cheap clown suits.

Oregon SB Nation Blog is suppressing the Truth

I put the post below up on the Oregon SB Nation Blog and they removed it and blocked me from posting again.
I guess that the Truth really does hurt

“One out of Five is Not so Bad !”
“The Ducks have been to the Rose Bowl five times before, but have only closed the deal one time. They got their one and only win 93 years ago back in 1917. So it should not be to surprising that they increased their Rose Bowl losing streak to 4 in a row. Some teams are destined for greatness and others are not, the Ducks are not. Sorry Duck fans ! When you bring up their “One out of Five” stat, well for one it has no basis on how they play today at all, secondly all that does is take away from OUR accomplishment. When you sit their and point out how “bad” of a team you think they are historically or now, it means it takes less of an OSU team to beat them.

Pryor definitely showed that he was up to the challenge that Oregon presented to him. If he can play consistently like that, Ohio State has a couple years of greatness ahead of them, and it will show that Pryor definitely made the right choice of which school he should of played at.

And you guys had had pride in your defense, and that pride is well deserved. The D-Line is full of some of the most disciplined players Oregon has gone up against, and your coverage created enough time for Masoli to look average-at-best.

A good game to Oregon as well!

I forgot to point this out in my fanpost, but I’ll point to it here. After getting punched in the mouth in the first quarter, the Oregon defensive coaching staff did a FANTASTIC job of adjustments to take away what was making Ohio State successful. The Ducks D responded slowly at first, obviously as surprised as everyone else (including us Buckeye fans), but settled down and started making plays – especially that linebacker Rowe. Very well played.

In the end, Pryor just made the plays to win the game, and it seemed like no amount of defense was going to stop him.

by Eric at the BBC on Jan 2, 2010 5:32 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Isn’t Rowe a defensive end?
Either way, he did play pretty stout throughout the night, against some of Pryor’s scrambles. It was very interesting, the way we played after those sacks though. He really waited in the pocket for a while, and if no one was open, hit the holes, (where Rowe was not at, most of the time I’m sure.)

Although, it is worth pointing out, I think Pryor got an awesome stiff arm on Rowe at some point. He has several throughout the game.

by Simmsinns on Jan 2, 2010 5:39 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

He sure did. Both Pryor and Rowe gave as good as they got. That was quite a battle to watch.

As for whether he’s a lineback or a d-end, I honestly thought he was a d-end, but ESPN’s roster has him listed as a Linebacker. He could be playing some kind of hybrid role like Bobby Carpenter did…. Maybe someone who has followed Oregon more closely could answer that question?

by Eric at the BBC on Jan 2, 2010 5:52 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Rowe is what some of us are calling a “DUEback” (Defensive End Utility).
He plays both LB and DE.

He’s the same guy that chased down Saine after getting beat on the outside.

But that tide has now turned.

We avenged Juice Williams’ victory over us. Twice.
Darryl Clark was shut down by the defense.
Ricky Dobbs.
Tate Fivecier.
And now Masoli.

I think our problems with the mobile QB have been resolved.

Did anyone else notice

how Brent Musberger could talk about nothing other than Zack Boren and the weather changes?

Bulls and Hawks winning in the playoffs, Cubs' season off to a fresh start, and Cutler hysteria still simmering?

Just another day in Chicago sports.

Brent Musberger

I hate that guy.

Hmm, I love Musberger. I think he’s one of the best college football announcers. I think he and Herbie call a great game together. Some of his calls are classic, such as the famous “Holy Buckeye” call after Krenzel’s TD pass to Jenkins in the ’02 Purdue game.

Why don’t you like him?

I do like the Holy Buckeye call.

I think I’ve just come to find his voice a little annoying. I kind of thought he just goes along with the overall sports media trashing of the Buckeyes post-2006 till now. Even during much of this years Rose Bowl, there was a lot of fairly unrelated talk about our previous failings and whatnot.

To be honest, I think the NCAA football video game kind of over played their voices too. The canned commentary in that game has just been absolutely atrocious over the past 5 years. I used to play it A LOT back in the day.

Come to think of it, the only television announcers across any sport that I can think of actually really liking are Austin Carr and Fred Mcleod.

what canned commentary?

“great throw. great catch. great play.”

I don’t really remember Musberger ever trashing the Buckeyes. Maybe he did talk during the Rose Bowl about our previous bowl losses but there’s nothing wrong with that because it was part of the story. Even the Buckeyes players knew that they had to win this game to overcome the national perception of the team, so I don’t see anything wrong with mentioning it. We can’t just ignore that they’ve played poorly in recent big games because it is a fact. But I think he’s always treated OSU fairly.

Actually, I would have to say my favorite announcers are Gus Johnson and Bill Raftery from Basketball. Oh man they can call a game!

Why would you ever want to run the prevent defense? It's a defense specifically designed to prevent the field goal by giving them a touchdown!

Yeah, both of those guys are great. Gus Johnson is doing the Browns game right now, actually, and I love how excited he gets for big plays. That’s what you love from an announcer.

Although, if I remember correctly Gus Johnson, is NOT good at announcing MMA fights. It happens to be a sport that he simply doesn’t know enough about, I’m guessing. But the announcing of the Fedor vs. Rogers was all over the place.

Greatest Gus Johnson call ever http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE0c-TzO7d4

Also, I do like Austin Carr but I’m not a big fan of McLeod. I liked Michael Reghi much better and wish the Cavs hadn’t gotten rid of him. But the best basketball announcer is Hubie Brown without a doubt. He’s fantastic.

My personal favorite basketball announcer is Joe Tait, but of course that’s radio. But he’s the only voice I’ll ever be comfortable with Cav’s radio. There’s something about his voice that makes not being able to see the action not as bad.

Bonus points, for not being this guy, Steve Holman of Atlanta.

You’re right, Joe Tait is great. I love hearing his voice doing basketball. In fact, one time many years ago I found a Cleveland Rockers game when I was driving and listened to about 5 minutes of it just because Tait was annoucing the game (and I couldn’t care less about the WNBA). I think he’s the only NBA radio announcer who still does the games by himself.
