Is Ohio State the preseason #1 in 2010?

It's a fair question.  Will the Buckeyes be placed atop the pedestal before the season begins?

You're on a biased Ohio State blog, so you know what our answer is going to be.  But wait, we actually have a coherent argument to back up our claims.

Take a look at the numbers and tell us what you think.

The Buckeyes finished the 2009 season at 11-2, including three wins over Top 10 schools in their final four games (Iowa, Penn State, and Oregon).  They also set an unprecedented mark by knocking off FIVE 10-win schools.  Yes, we fell to two teams we should have defeated...by a total of 11 points, though.  Those losses were the learning blocks of the team that just dominated the Pac-10 champion and unstoppable (LOL) Oregon Ducks offense.

Add to that a bevy of returning starters, sprinkle in some names with good experience as backups in 2008 and 2009, and you've got the makings of a preseason frontrunner.

Don't just take our word for it.  Judge for yourself.

Let's look it over;

Star-divide

The offense had plenty of struggles throughout the season, but always seemed to step up in the big games when it was necessary.

In 2010, Ohio State will be returning the following starters on offense;

  • QB Terrelle Pryor
  • RB Brandon Saine
  • RB Boom Herron
  • FB Zach Boren
  • WR DeVier Posey
  • WR Dane Sanzenbacher
  • RT J.B. Shugarts
  • RG Bryant Browning
  • C Mike Brewster
  • LG Justin Boren

At the tight end position, Jake Stoneburner has seen plenty of playing time and will replace Jake Ballard admirably.  The same can be said for Andrew Miller at LT, replacing Jim Cordle.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Bucks will be returning these athletes;

  • DT Dexter Larrimore
  • DE Thaddeus Gibson (Lord willing)
  • DE Cameron Heyward
  • LB Ross Homan
  • LB Brian Rolle
  • FS Jermale Hines
  • CB Devon Torrence
  • CB Chimdi Chekwa

Add in a familiar name - Tyler Moeller - who will return from his head injury for the 2010 season, and this is an impressive defense, especially at linebacker.

That equals 19 players with extensive starting experience, and a long list of additional experience.  Hell, we haven't even mentioned Jordan Hall, Jermil Martin, Jamaal Berry, Lamaar Thomas, and a long list of players with a pedigree of excellence.

That's the resume for the Buckeyes, and it's worhty.  But who would take the #1 slot instead?

#1 Alabama will return QB Greg McElroy, WR Julio Jones and (of course) Heisman Winner Mark Ingram.  But they have 10 players in their starting lineup who are graduating seniors (if they graduate).  Only four defenders will come back for the Tide.

#2 Texas loses Colt McCoy, Jordan Shipley, and six other starters on both sides of the ball.  They'll be strong, but the two best players are gone.

#3 TCU loses eight starters from a team that nobody has really seen or truly believes in.  Besides, do you really think that voters will give the Horned Frogs the top slot?

#4 Cincinnati loses a coach and 16 of their 22 starters.  They also lost the respect of any thinking voter after what they laid a massive turd in the Sugar Bowl.

#5 Florida loses Saint Tebow, but only five other starters will leave the Gators squad.  Will the loss of Urban Meyer play a factor in the decisions of 10 starting juniors and whether or not they will leave early for the pros?  And will Meyer's absence hurt their standing with poll voters?

#6 Boise State returns 20 starters.  But they're Boise State, so shut up.

#7 Oregon returns 19 starters in 2010, but didn't we just dispose of that thought?

That leaves us.

#9 Georgia Tech and #10 Iowa return a lot of starters also, so include the winner of the Orange Bowl in this conversation.

As we see it, Ohio State is at best the top pick to start 2010, and at worst a Top 3 pick.

Your thoughts?  Got a team with a better resume?

Perhaps

Now people will complain about the hype surrounding the team, just as they throw the bcs monkey off their shoulders.

The King is dead, long live the new reason to resent Ohio State football.

Bros before hoes. Why? Because your bros are always there for you. They got your back after your hoe rips your heart out for no good reason. And you were nothing but great to your hoe, and you told her that she was the only hoe for you. And that she was better than all the other hoes in the world. And then suddenly...she's not yo' hoe no mo'.

True, the haters will find ANY, I mean ANY, reason to discredit us and the Big 10 in general.

As for other Top 10 teams, I think Wiscy should be one as well.

Penn State beat LSU. Ohio State beat Oregon. It’d really help for Iowa to beat GT.

Those are pretty damn good teams that got beat by the weak Big 10!

I don’t think they’ll be #1, but definitely in the top 5. If Alabama wins, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them #1.

Did anyone hear the announcers talking about Tebow during the game? (rolls eyes)

There was a Tebow cam online

so you could watch him even when the defense was on the field

Our schedule for 2010 is very favorable as well.

All 4 OOC games at home (I dislike this BTW) – Marshall, Miami Fl, Ohio U, East Michigan ….

In Big 10 play, road games – Illinois, Wiscy, Minny, Iowa; home games – Indy, Purdue, Penn St, Michigan.

So I count four games to make our season, Miami Fl in Week 2, roadies at Wiscy, Iowa and home vs Penn St.

Not to take away from the achievements of our MAC friends, but being realistic. Michigan State is 6-6 and going bowling.

If we can beat Miami at home next year...

we should be in good shape. Randy Shannon has cleaned up their program, but I’m not sure if he’s gonna be the coach that takes them to the promised land. Plus, for whatever reason, Miami has a tough time playing against Big Ten teams (see Wisconsin this year, 2002 national title year). I think we’ll be able to pull out a victory at the show next year

I said after the USC loss that 2009=2005

would be the best case scenario and I stand behind that. two losses in the regular season but a bowl win and some serious momentum going into next year, I think 2010 could end up being a lot like 2006, hopefully with a little different ending, but a #1 overall ranking is a possibility, and the 2010 defense will have a lot more returning than the 2006 D, even if a few juniors decide to go pro early

Time and change will surely show

osu will be #1 wire to wire next year culminating in a 57-55 thrilling win over michigan after which heisman trophy winner pryor and the boys go into full letdown mode with such a sense of complacency and invincibility and arrogance that would leave them unable to beat even western kentucky?

oh… you said little different ending. whew. :)

I think 2010 could end up being a lot like 2006

Man, I would love that. Other than the ending of course. The 2006 offense is still my favorite and most memorable OSU offensive unit of all-time. If Pryor and company even came close to that, with our current / 2010 defense, I can only imagine the possibilities.

Only 9 more months….

As for us being No. 1 in the preseason poll next season...

I hope not, b/c that team hardly ever makes it to the BCS title game…

I do believe we will be top 5, maybe top 3 but I’d prefer to NOT be the #1 team in the preseason….

And I hope the haters/doubters don’t ever go away (they obviously won’t), b/c they make our wins even sweeter!

Congrats!

I am a huge fan of Coach Tressel, and I just wanted to come by and congratulate you guys on the win! I was also impressed with Pryor yesterday. I believe that if he learns to calm down in the pocket and make reads he will be an unbelievable player, but he is big and strong and can run very well! He was also on the $$$ when he was given time in the pocket.

I always root for you guys! You all should be loaded for next year too. Again, congratulations and keep the class!

I agree with the sentiment that preseason polls are quite possibly

the second dumbest thing in college football. But you’re right Jeff, this feels a lot like the Notre Dame win in 2006 (This one feels a lot better actually, considering the circumstances).

However, being an Ohio State fan I’m completely prepared for two or three fourth quarter battles with the Minnesotas and Purdues of the world.

I hope not

Not because I don’t love tOSU, but I would really like for them to play from the shadows at the beginning of next year. Pre-season #1 puts unecessary scrutiny and pressure on a team, regardless of who it is.

I think Pryor will be in the pre-season Heisman talk, and rightfully so, but give the pre-season #1 to Alabama or LSU or USC. Anything in the top 10 I can live with

It’s not whether you start at #1, but whether or not you finish there.

by buckeyerob on Jan 2, 2010 11:14 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well...
  1. winner of Ala/Tex
  2. winner of TCU/Boise
  3. Florida (if Alabama wins)
  4. Loser of Ala/Tex (unless Texas wins, then switch 3 and 4)
  5. Boise/Ohio State/Cincinnati

There will be at least 2 undefeated teams, four teams with one loss, and Ohio State (Best two loss team).

So, the question is whether or not the pollsters jump them over a one loss Cincy (please, God) and/or Boise/TCU

The Bearcats will pay dearly for yesterday. They’d been struggling with their defense for weeks.

The final season rankings don’t matter much either.

We WON the Grand Daddy of ‘em ALL! We won the best bowl game you can win. The only game I’d rather play in is the bogus BCS National Championship Game. I see us as #2 behind the winner of that one.

I’ve been saying this since the last game of the season: OSU is capable of beating any team in the top 10 right now. Bring on the got damn PLAYOFF! Then maybe these final rankings will matter, except they won’t be “voted on rankings,” but rather Final Standings.

OR- the gratitude vote, for not playing well enough to give Urban the Waffler a heart attack.

I think we would have a chance at being ranked #1 if..

we were in the SEC. It’s like you get extra credit for being there. I think they will probably end up around #4, which I’m fine with. I don’t think the Big 10 has done enough this bowl season to gain that much credibility with public perception. Even though it should have.

The Question is: Which obscure SEC team will undeservedly crack the preseason top 10 next year? Maybe Arkansas?

The great thing about college football is all the enthusiastic fans but honestly beating oregon in the rose shouldnt and looking much better than an average pac 10 teamcan make fans forget about the big 11’s previous record in bowl games, although the big 11 is closing the gap that the sec has established but it will take 3 to 5 years before a big 11 will be ranked # 1 in my humble opinion at the start or finish to any season.
