National Letter of Intent Day: Ohio State

Written February 2nd, 2011 by MaliBuckeye

Update: Don’t miss out on Fox Sports Ohio’s Signing Day LiveBlog starting at Noon Eastern Time!

Welcome to “Second Christmas” for many college football fans, and a day that’s shaping up to be a great one for Ohio State’s family. Based on verbal commitments alone, the Buckeyes 2011 class has been ranked at #11 (Rivals), #7 (ESPN), and  #4 (Scout) nationally.

Who wants to join Braxton this fall?

Stay tuned to The Buckeye Battlecry for today’s news and notes as student athletes and future Buckeyes sign their National Letters of Intent. If you’ve got questions about the NLoI, check out either the program’s home page or the NCAA info sheet.

We’ll be updating this post as the faxes come in to Columbus, and will let you know as Ohio State gains new commitments from students who are still in process. Will we see another Kenny Guiton- type surprise?

For Ohio State fans, the questions that will be answered today include- “Will any of the current verbals flip their commitment?”, “Where will Glenville’s Aundrey Walker, Cardale Jones (Ohio State), and Andre Sturdivant end up?”, “Will the Buckeyes be able to keep Curtis Grant and JuJuan Story (no) away from the Gators?”

We’ll be joined later today by the team at Fox Sports Ohio for a livechat, and hope you’ll spend a little of your workday sharing your opinion with us as well.

Let’s get started!

Enrolled Buckeyes

  • Jeremy Cash, DB, 6’2″, 190 lbs, Plantation (FL) HS
  • Joel Hale, DL, 6’5″, 295 lbs, Greenwood (IN) Center Grover HS
  • Jeff Heuerman, TE, 6’5″, 230 lbs, Naples (FL) Barron Collier HS
  • Braxton Miller, QB, 6’3″ 200 lbs, Huber Heights (OH) Wayne HS
  • Ryan Shazier, OLB/DE, 6’3″, 205 lbs, Plantation (FL) HS

These young men aren’t required to sign the LOI, since they have already enrolled. You may have seen them on campus over the past few weeks… I know the Florida guys are enjoying the snow.

It is Cardale right? I’ve heard several people use Cordale. It’s getting confusing.

Looks like Aundrey Walker is heading out west, pretty huge surprise but not the end of the world. Best of luck to him in SoCal.

If a kid chooses Lane Kiffin and Ed Orgeron over Jim Tressel… well, we’ll just leave it at that.

It could be read multiple ways, but just to be clear, I was talking about the character and class of those involved… not making back handed cheating accusations.

I hear USC has a real nice “relocation” program for family members.

Things are looking really good for Grant to OSU though, from what I’m hearing.

Eric, What have you heard from Curtis Grant??? He is the second most important recruit for us behind Braxton in my opinion!! I’ve really been hoping he signs!!

The word is he is all Buckeye, but as Aundrey Walker has taught us, you can never be sure until the LOI is faxed.

We will find out soon enough, I believe he is announcing at 1:30.

Yes, the announcement will be made at 1:30 PM on ESPNU.

Don’t get your hopes up, especially with the Aundrey Walker thing, but a number of “recruiting experts” have been saying that OSU fans should closely watch the decision.

Take from that what you will.

Jones in. Price Confirmed. Grant Later. That makes for a great signing day IMHO.

Next year is loaded in state with Oline. Already have Kalis and Boren. Not the end of the world losing Walker. It hurts more from the standpoint of him being from Glenville more than losing an olineman.

And obviously being wrong about it in the guesses post! :(

Der’Juan Gambrell’s LOI signing has been rescheduled (apparently) for 9am tomorrow due to the weather.

The story coming out about Chris Carter is particularly ugly. Arrested for fondling. Ewww. This is not your standard curfew violation.

No, this is a terrifying news story.

No comment yet from either Ohio State or his High School of any sort, but it seems extraordinarily unlikely at this point that he will ever be a Buckeye.

Said this somewhere else, so I’ll quote myself

WAAAAAAY off topic, but the arbitrary age delineation we use in our legal system creates some big problems.

THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE, what he did was wrong and there should be consequences (including loss of scholarship). But if he was a HS junior who did this to a fellow HS student, then the recourse would be significantly different. And we know that HS kids do this type of thing…So, somehow it gets worse because of a calendar?

Again, not trying to defend him… I just work with young adults who’ve run into this “issue” (kid turns 18 and dad turns him into the cops), and I think it sucks.

Back to Chris, who I hope gets the support that he needs, whatever that looks like.

Mali, I think that I understand your point, but this is unbelievable. Yeah, I know when we were all 18, grabbing a little T&A was probably at the top of our minds, but.. what kind of dumbass does this repeatedly, on school grounds?! Was this kid tone-deaf to implications of his behavior?

    I hear you…

    Wonder what this might mean:

Carter story takes twist: Attorney says Carter will be released tonight, and detective tells him likely won’t be charged. Free to sign?

Thanks for link, I did see that article and I’m really nor sure what it means. If he won’t be charged, then I guess he’s free to sign. This might require a ‘come-to-Jesus’ conversation with the lad.

    I think this is a great, well-rounded, well-balanced class.
And, I just love how ESPN keeps DROPPING! us in their top 10 rankings! Hey Tom Luginbill — get a clue!
It seems that all of our top players drop in their “ESPNU 150″ rankings once they commit to tOSU, either quickly or gradually, (D. Grant, B. Miller, B. Bobek).
I know youre in love with the SEC, ESPN, but – at least try to make it a little less obvious next time.

I agree with you, J, I really like this class. A little bit of every thing and they seem to really, really want to be part of Buckeye family. This is a good day.

p.s. Too bad with C.Carter, BUT glad that this happened before he was officially a Buckeye instead over the summer, we know the media, ESPN and the like would have a heyday in on a slow June news day, for example if this would have happened in the summer.
As for A. Walker — yeah, in the dead of winter, USC is appealing and what not, BUT, if this kid is not smart enough to realize that Jim Tressel and his talented coaches are PROVEN winners (more wins over the past 6 years than any team), and he opts with the unproven, overrated Lane Kiffin — then that’s not the kind of IQ you want on your team.
