Fickell Promoted to Assistant Head Coach

Written March 30th, 2011 by MaliBuckeye

Ohio State has announced today that Luke Fickell has been promoted to Assistant Head Coach, effective immediately.

AD Gene Smith, in the announcement, had this to say-

Luke Fickell is a Buckeye to the core. He has earned this promotion to assistant head coach through his hard work, dedication and performance. We have great trust and belief in Luke’s ability to work with our entire coaching staff to lead our young men through the first five games this fall. I have confidence our entire football family will work together to maintain our standard of excellence.

These responsibilities will include serving as head coach during Coach Jim Tressel’s suspension in the 2011 season, which is currently set for five games. The NCAA investigation, as you know, is ongoing.

Coach Fickell is a Columbus native Ohio State graduate, and was named the AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year in 2010. Currently, he serves as the Buckeyes linebacker coach and co-defensive coordinator. He fills the role that has been vacant since Coach Hazell left to become the head coach at Kent State University.

Congratulations, Coach Fickell!

Fickell is extremely impressive in the press conference going on right now. I hope Ohio State locked him up for the foreseeable future. I absolutely want him as the next defensive coordinator long term, if not the next head coach at Ohio State.

Scandal or not, Tressel has been laying the ground work for the transition when he retires, and I think Fickell is going to be a huge part of that transition.

YES. This is exactly the move I hoped Ohio State would make in Tressel’s absence. We’ve long thought of Luke Fickell as a great future head coach – now he gets his chance to prove it.

Hopefully, though, this doesn’t lead to him getting an excellent position at another school. I want him taking over for Tressel when the time comes.

First, congratulations to Mr. Fickell. Well done.

    Questions, since I can’t remember stuff as good as I used to;
    1. When is JT’s current contract up?
    2. Is this a move to encourage Fickell to stay, in a role of heir apparent?

I believe Tressel’s contract currently goes through 2015

Tressel’s current contract runs through the 2014 season and I didn’t think he was going to go for another extension even before all of the off-field stuff hit the fan.

Fickell was “promoted” to assistant head coach, so I assume he also received a pay raise (although I am not certain about that)which will certainly help to keep him around.

Once again, I think Tressel has been laying the ground work for the regime change upon his retirement for years, and this certainly seems to be the next logical step. Fickell is being groomed as the next defensive coordinator at Ohio State (I think Heacock and Bollman both retire when Tressel does), if not the outright head coach.

When the time comes, in 2015 or sooner, I think Fickell and Hazell will be neck and neck as the favorite to be the next HC at Ohio State.
