UPDATE: OSU/NCAA Investigation

Written May 31st, 2011 by MaliBuckeye

We’ve received numerous reports today that the NCAA and the Ohio State Athletic department are in the midst of a collaborative investigation regarding the allegations involved in yesterday’s Sports Illustrated piece.

Speculation is that the investigation continues to center on current Buckeye QB Terrelle Pryor; particularly his usage of various automobiles from local vendors.  NBC4 is also reporting that Pryor is currently driving on a suspended license.

Given that the University began looking into arrangements with auto dealers several weeks ago, it would not be surprising that their discoveries, combined with the SI article, have led to this current exploration of the automotive situation. In addition, last week’s article in the Lantern had Ray Small discussing automotive issues, as did a post several weeks ago from Buckeye alumni Mark Titus.

It should be noted that the Ohio BMV has reviewed the sales involving Aaron Kiffin and Ohio State players, and has determined that these were legitimate (that the dealership made money on each transaction).  Left to be determined is the use of “loaner” cars; something that was a part of the Maurice Clarett investigation, but was not deemed inappropriate at that time by the NCAA.

In addition, several sports media personalities, including Buckeye legend Chris Spielman, have indicated that they believe that Terrelle will enter the NFL Supplemental Draft in June. To do so, his status with the University and the team will have to have changed; it’s been speculated since yesterday that he has effectively played his last game at Ohio State based on concerns that have led to this investigation.

More on this as it develops.

Ed alluded to one of the new questions, what is the best option for quarterback now that TP is likely not returning after the first 5 games? Put Braxton in and develop him? Not as much as a need for a “game manager” to await TP’s return (if he indeed is gone).

This actually brings up a couple really interesting questions.

If Pryor is officially done, who do we run at QB? Do we redshirt Braxton and hope to maximize his time in the program? Do we instead play him in the hopes of making Fickell’s first year a success?

Would playing Braxton help or hurt Coach Fickell? Who would be a better choice, Kenny G or Joe B.?

Braxton Miller to me as far as eyeball test on my TV from here in South west Fla. in the spring passed. He shows no indication hes a Freshman…. he has command in the huddle…and you have to love his mechanics already as a passer, granted he has alot to learn ….but c’mon this kid looks like a young Troy Smith. Yes , i said that. His body mannerisms , how he holds the ball …..its gonna be fun to watch him. But there is no question….seeing the evergrowing implications by the day the Pryor is done in Columbus on who should start at QB for us come fall.

….and lets not forget that the cubbard isn’t bare at RB either. Rodderick Smith ( Fresh ) i see taking advantage of reps and eventually getting regular playtime….

The only worry I have about Brax is his durability. Particularly since we’re going to be juggling our line for a bit.

Yup. He’s been driving a newer charger recently, since his car was in the shop for a “blown engine” according to his roommate.

However, he’s also driving with a suspended license. So there’s that.
