It’s been a while since we’ve done an “official” playlist here at the mothership, although our posts certainly reflect how much of an impact music has on our lives- It’s not gameday without music.
While that’s obvious to any true Buckeye, since they don’t call it “The Marginally Adequate Musical Group In This General Vacinity At This Point In Time“, for many people the tunes start during the week of the game and don’t end until we’ve sung Carmen Ohio and “wobbled in our shoes“.
And it’s not just the marching band that’s highlights our college sports experience; Buckeye fans have embraced many other songs as part of the Ohio State canon- “Hang On Sloopy” is an obvious example, but you could include “Neutron Dance” and “Seven Nation Army” to the hymnody bathed in scarlet and gray. The “Bong!!!” that we resonate with, even on our livechats during the games, comes from a rock and roll anthem; like many college fans, hearing the “O Fortuna” from Carmina Burona doesn’t give images of Italian opera; instead it’s the sountrack to Saturdays.
Even the band has crossed over into the world of mainstream music.
And I’m sure there’s many, many more examples that we can come up with.
Because of the melodic connection so many fans have with Buckeye Sports, we often get great musical “submissions” here at tBBC. Today, we want to highlight a few of them and give you a chance to connect with local artists who bleed scarlet and gray just as much as you do.
Mekka Don- Let’s Go (O-H-I-O)
This is a song that you’re probably already familiar with- it’s been played at the ‘Shoe, and Mekka Don even performed it as part of the Homecoming festivities prior to the game against Nebraska.
Mekka Don was a huge part of Welcome Week at OSU, and it’s easy to see that his time on Coach Tressel’s teams inspired him to pursue greatness. He is a Columbus native and an OSU alumni who graduated in three years, and went on to obtain his law degree from NYU. He received a high paying job at a NY Law firm before leaving to pursue his dream as a hip hop artist. His new mixtape “Its On” has seen 2 songs (Dirty and Here We Go) featured on MTV, VHI and Sirius Radio.
There are lots of ways to support him; via his website, following him on twitter, checking out his mixtape, and picking up his stuff on iTunes. If you want to be sure to add Juice to your day, this is the way to go.
YEAH- Hard In Ohio
If classic rock is more your cup of tea, this song from YEAH (Your Escape Artist Heroes) might just end up in your daily playlist.
Made up of a bunch of friends from the Warren Ohio area, YEAH has been playing together for several years and are performing various venues across the state. The track above is inspired by the Ohio State football heritage and history, and produced at Landen Studios in Warren as well.
If you’d like to get in touch with the guys and catch their next gig, check them out on facebook; you can also download their work (including this song) at their iTunes page.
Don Argento- My Ohio
For those who prefer a little more fiddle in their musich, this song from Columbus’ Don Argento almost feels like a Buckeye State version of the classic “Country Roads” by John Denver. It’s definitely a tune that will be bouncing around your head for the rest of the day, if not longer.
Don’s been a musician for as long as he can remember, and will be celebrating the release of his latest album “Livin’ The Dream” on December 8 at the King Avenue Five- the song above is one of the tracks being featured on this new work. You can connect with him and purchase his earlier work at his website: DonArgento.com
Rebecca Davis- Buckeye Battle Cry
We got this video earlier in the year from The NOC, who also brought us the hilarious “Cardale Jones Tweets” song and the review of every college football fan. While it’s part of an advertising plug for their site, we couldn’t help but include it due to the title alone.
Plus, the fact that it’s opera helps us look classy… which never hurts.
