Welcome to The Buckeye Battle Cry’s signing day headquarters for Ohio State’s 2013 class!

For people that follow recruiting obsessively, this is like the Super Bowl.

Below you will find all of the latest information on the players that may be deciding to join Ohio State’s class today, as well as the latest updates on the verbally committed players that have signed and faxed their letters of intent to Ohio State.

Please feel free to join the conversation in the comments section. We would also like to give a shout out to the fantastic work and community discussion that takes place over at BuckeyePlanet.com.

Also, Fox Sports Ohio will be hosting a livechat with Bill Greene at noon today; be sure to head over to get the latest on Buckeye and national recruiting news.

Vonn Bell and James Clark will announce their decisions early in the morning, which could make an already exciting day even better.

Ezekiel Elliott will announce his college decision later in the day and there is buzz surrounding Taivon Jacobs and Trey Johnson potentially not signing with Ohio State as originally planned.

Regardless of what happens, this class is one of the top groups in the nation and Urban Meyer is clearly stockpiling the talent necessary for future National Title chases in the years to come.

The two biggest things to watch this morning are obviously the decisions announced by James Clark and Vonn Bell.

What happens with Taivon Jacobs will also be interesting. There is speculation that family considerations (he has a child) could be causing him to reconsider and stay closer to home at Maryland. You also can’t ignore that the additions of Dontre Wilson and potentially James Clark at his position could be a motivating factor as well.

Ezekiel Elliott will also be announcing a decision later in the day. Most people are confident that he will be a Buckeye, but he is considering the home school and the addition of Wilson (although the coaches have made it clear that they won’t be playing the same position) could also be a factor.

Finally, there is a slight buzz that Trey Johnson could be choosing someone other than Ohio State today. He is scheduled to have a ceremony in the afternoon but may fax in his LOI before then.

It will be an interesting day…

I am happy with the class as it is and look forward to seeing which of the early enrollees make an impact . . , I will say sprinkle because I think he could be a lot like Darrion Scott and play anywhere around the front seven

Trey Johnson signed his LOI to Ohio State as reported by Mark Pantoni on Twitter. So I guess that speculation is put to rest early.

fwiw, as of 10:43 am, Rivals has us ranked as the #1 class. They have been very quick to adjust their lists and rankings. Jacobs was very quickly off the OSU list and on to the Maryland list.

btw, I don’t seem to be able to edit my comments. I can either go to the first line or the last. So apologies for typos and stuff.

anyway, if you ever look and run the Rivals’ formula on how they come up with points, it is not surprising to see tOSU class jump to #1. Rivals really really really puts a premium on their 5* players. So, adding Vonn today added a good 150+ points to tOSU total. Likewise, a 4* like Clark was a net “positive” in terms of Rivals’ ranking points coupled with the loss of a 3*. Just talking the Rivals’ formula, not disrespecting Mr. Jacobs.

aw, that probably explains why my “right click” never works. I tend to right click a link and open it in a new tab/page. But that doesn’t work on BBC.

Not a problem, but nice to know why. btw, thanks for the good work here on BBC.

I’ve been pretty busy updating these pages so I haven’t read anything, but I don’t think there is any reason to worry at this point. Maybe Pantoni got distracted after Bell committed and forgot to continue providing updates.

okay, so i am insane. Rivals is keeping track of signed LOI per team. Florida, for example, has all 27 of their LOI. As of 11:13 (ET), ‘Bama is still waiting on 8 and Michigan is waiting on 6, LSU needs 4 and Texas A&M has only 9 of their 32 commits.

    Definitely in the discussion.

It would be interesting to look at in more detail later, and of course, you can’t really grade a recruiting class 100% accurately until their eligibility is up.

Off the top of my head- 1967 (super sophs) 2002 and 2008 would be in the discussion as well.

    [Reply]

FWIW, Rivals had the 2008 class at 2481 points vs. the current class at 2903. Rivals gave the 2002 class 2342 points. That is the earliest Rivals ranking.
Rivals has tweaked its formula over the years, but not significantly. I think the Rivals rankings are comparable across years.

again, FWIW, a quick look back through the Rivals rankings, only these classes have exceeded our current 2903 point total: 2010 USC with 3003; 2010 Florida with 2938; 2007 Florida with 2959; 2006 USC with 3001; 2006 Florida with 2901; and 2004 USC with 3009.

My first thought is how much talent USC squandered. My lord ! How many 1-3rd ranked classes and how many NCs? Wow.

At least via the Rivals formula, this the best tOSU class certainly in a decade.

Off topic and apropos of nothing, but while we’re waiting for more NLOI Day news, a ‘Bama friend of mine predicts tOSU’s wins and scores for 2013:

    (with commentary too; LOL):

    buffalo (who?)….55-10
    san diego state (new coach)…47-14
    california (new coach)…51-21
    florida a&m (who?)…..61-0
    wisconsin (new coach)….42-17
northwestern (scary this may actually be best competition)…38-21
Iowa (just because it is Iowa they will surprise us and play well)…34-23
penn state (on meyer’s radar, 42-21)
purdue (also on meyer’s radar) 51-14
    illinois (who?)…51-10
indiana (new coach making an impact)….45-24
    michigan (hoke 3rd year) 34-27

Meyer has only one game that he could possibly lose….michigan.

My friend thinks it will be a Saban vs. Meyer NCG next year.

a quick look around the B1G.

    as of around noon (ET):

    tOSU waiting on 3;
Illinois waiting on 10 (of 25)
    Penn State: 2 of 17
    Indiana: all 22 LOI signed
    MSU: all 17 LOI signed
Wiscy: waiting on 4 of 20
Neb: waiting on 3 of 24
TSUN: waiting on 4 of 27
Iowa: waiting on 1 of 21
NU: have all their 19 LOI
Purdue: waiting on 1 of 24
Minny: waiting on 2 of 19

Minny is the lowest ranked class on Rivals (at #59); three top ten classes (tOSU, MI and Nebraska).

Currently, Rutgers comes in at #46, just ahead of Penn State and behind Indiana but ahead of six current B1G schools.

Maryland comes in currently at #30, ahead of 9 B1G teams including MSU and Wiscy.

right. thought that myself. after the last two players left the team, I thought we only had 23-24 scholarships to give. so, honestly, I was a bit surprised to see us listed at 25 on Rivals. so, in that regard, i have a feeling that the coaching staff expected Jacobs to stay near home and sign with Maryland.
