Buckeye Athletics Update

Men’s Gymnastics

3/9 – No. 4 Ohio State defeated No. 15 UIC by a score of 439.200-409.050 on Saturday at St. John Arena. Six Buckeyes won individual event titles at the meet (floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, and parallel & high bars.  Junior Michael Newberger won his fourth event title of the season on the pommel horse. Teammate Alex Johnson won his second consecutive title on the high bar.

Men’s Lacrosse

3/9 – No. 8/11 Ohio State was defeated by No. 7/7 Denver 10-9 on Saturday at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.  At halftime, the Pioneers led 6-5, and then they took an 8-5 lead in the third quarter. In the fourth, Ohio State cut the Denver lead to 2 at 9-7 after a Charlie Schnider goal. Later on, they cut the lead to one at 10-9, but they were unable to score again to tie. Logan Schuss had 3 points for the Buckeyes while teammate & goalie Greg Dutton had nine saves.

Men’s Track & Field

3/9 – Buckeye senior Chris Fallon took sixth in the mile at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His time of 4:02.28 earned him a sixth place finish and First Team All-America Honors.

Men’s Volleyball

3/8-9 – No. 9 Ohio State swept Grand Canyon this weekend with 3-0 wins on both Friday and Saturday.  On Friday, the Buckeyes won 25-23, 25-17, and 26-24 led by sophomore Michael Henchy’s 16 kills and sophomore Andrew Lutz’s 14 kills. On Saturday, the Bucks won 25-21, 25-14, and 25-15 led by Chen Levitan’s 15 kills and  3 block assists.

Women’s Gymnastics

3/9 – No. 18 Ohio State defeated Bridgeport by a score of 196.850-194.300 yesterday at St. John Arena.  Sarah Miller won the vault event for the Buckeyes with a score of 9.900.  Teammate Aly Marohn won the individual event on bars with a score of 9.950.

Women’s Hockey

3/8 – No. 1 Minnesota defeated Ohio State in the WCHA Final Face-Off 5-0 on Friday. Goalie Chelsea Knapp finished with 29 saves for the Buckeyes, who finished with 19 wins this season, the second most in the program’s history.

Rifle

3/8-9 – Amanda Luoma competed for Ohio State at the NCAA Championships this weekend. She shot a 580 on Friday in the smallbore, and finished 8th in the individual final on Saturday.

Softball

3/9 – Ohio State swept day one at the Miken Invitational on Saturday, defeating Maryland 10-9 and Radford 5-2. Against Maryland, in the bottom of the seventh, junior Leesa Gresham’s single to right field scored the game winning run for the Buckeyes by Taylor Watkins. Against Radford, Olivia O’Reilly led Ohio State to a victory with 15 strikeouts and allowing only three hits in seven innings.

Women’s Tennis

3/3 – Ohio State defeated Penn State 5-2 last Sunday at the Varsity Indoor Center.  Noelle Malley sealed the victory for the Buckeyes with a  6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sarah Henderson.  Later in the day, the Buckeyes defeated Youngstown State 7-0.  With the win, senior Gabby Steele now leads the team with 17 singles victories and 8 doubles victories.

Women’s Track & Field

3/8 – Ohio State senior Alexis Thomas finished eighth in the weight throw at the NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas to earn First Team All-America honors after posting 20.66 m.
