The women’s golf team opened its season at the Mary Fossum Invitational in East Lansing and were just four strokes away from victory.
OSU carded a total of 896, 32 over par. The host Spartans won.
Four individuals placed in the top 20 led by freshmen Ileen Domela, who tied for second with a 4-over 220.
Classmate Jessica Porvasnik tied for 7th at 223 while senior Allison Harper (225) tied for 12th and freshman Katja Pogacar (228) tied for 17th.
The men’s golf team wasn’t quite as fortunate, finishing 7th of 15 teams at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate in Sugar Grove, Ill., earlier this month.
Freshman Frederik Hammer carded a 5-over 221 to finish 20th in his first college event.
The OSU teams are heading in opposite directions.
The Lady Buckeyes are 6-1-2 overall and began Big 10 play with a 1-1 tie against Illinois.
Sophomore Michela Paradiso scored her first goal this season, finding the net in the 84th minute to help OSU earn the tie.
The men’s team is struggling at 2-3-2. Recent play included a pair of 0-0 ties at Bowling Green and at home against Wright State and a 3-1 home loss to Dayton.
Freshman Chance Henry notched his first collegiate goal in the loss.
Volleyball team soaring
The Lady Buckeyes continue to bump off the competition. They sit at 12-0 and are ranked 13th nationally.
In the recent Blue and White Classic OSU left the competition black and blue, bruising its way to a trifecta of 3-0 wins. Victims were Maryland Eastern Shore, Valpo and host Buffalo.
In the title match against Buffalo, Kaitlyn Leary led the way with 17 kills while Kylie Randall added 11. Taylor Sherwin notched 37 assists.
