If a bye week has taught me anything, it’s that I actually pay more attention to my work when we have one! I’m taking the opportunity to combine Rumblin, Stumblin, Bumblin with #tBBCFansInteract this week due to no special guest. Busy lives take away from peoples fun time and I cannot blame them for that. Let’s get started with the fans interaction from the Nerdwestern game which will play right into my Rumblin this week.
#NWTOPPLAY or #NWPOTG

Our running back situation went from a stable to a one man wrecking crew in just a matter of two weeks. Maybe, it was completely out of necesity, but it could also be from the shear will power that Carlos Hyde has shown in those two weeks. One thing is for sure after he rumbled to the tune of a new career high of 168 yards, he will not be denied his 1,000 yard season.
Hyde reminded me of a previous Carlos in the Buckeye backfield with his running style, mostly from an almost always gaining yards perspective. He was definitely getting his shoulders square and taking out defenders that were already battered and abused by the offensive line.
Speaking of the o-line, is there a better one in the B1G this season? Hyde’s success last Saturday can mostly be attributed to the fact that the Buckeye o-line was literally planting the d-line of NW. At one point early in the game they focused in on one of the better d-linemen for them with both hands on the hips and breathing rather heavily. He knew they were in for a thumping by the better line across from them.
The down but not out play of the Buckeye Secondary the past two weeks, and throw in Cal for good measure, has a lot of Buckeye fans scratching their heads and of course blaming Coach Fickel. Let’s get one thing perfectly clear. Coach Fickel is not the issue here.
Most of the time, and especially now without Christian Bryant, Bradley Roby is drawing the other teams best WR. He will do this in every game they play this season even if they make it to the championship game. The problem now, or at least until the youngsters grow up, is they have to play alot of zone and keep teams in front of them, period. If they play man a lot, they will get beat a lot and those big plays will be big scores, we do not want that. keep them under and give the defense a better chance on a short field where the boundaries can be defenders too.
The bye week couldn’t have come at a better time for this unit and Coach Coombs and the bunch will have them ready for the next match-up. What I enjoyed the most out of the fans interaction were the choices for ST and D MVP’s. Doran Grant was mentioned a bunch for making what could have been the play of the game and Roby got his fair share of ST mentions.
I am not quite sure how we got here with Jordan Hall versus where we were three weeks ago. What I do know is that a lot of people were surprised to see that he did not dress in the NW game which led to some speculation for why not much more than one carry the previous week. One thing is for sure, he may be getting an attitude adjustment after a stellar beginning to the season. I hope for his sake he really is dinged up and healing will be just what he needs to get back in the mix.
The Buckeyes are actually in the same boat with regards to Dontre Wilson. The difference here is it is clearly not an issue with the player and most fans are questioning the coaching staff about his disappearance. I’ve written it before and I will again. Those coaches, not us fans, make the decisions that are best for the team and for the player. Some of them hit brick walls a few eeks into camp and may actually get a redshirt(which fans question as well).
The truth of the matter is that if I was a parent of a D1 athlete, I too would expect those coaches to make decisions that are in the best interest of my son/daughter and that includes not overdoing it. It’s quite possible that Wilson needs a few weeks to readjust and take it all in and it’s also possible that he just wasn’t ready to handle the pressure of those two games. The coaches have been quick to praise the WR’s about their blocking abilities and success because of it. Maybe, just maybe, that’s exactly what Dontre Wilson needs to work on.
Enjoy the bye week and spend the weekend rooting for some of those teams we love to hate . . . to lose.
