Ohio State Drops Old Dominion

Written November 22nd, 2013 by Ken

The Buckeyes hosted the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs in the 1st round of the Hall of Fame Challenge. This is the first of three consecutive games for these teams, so this Challenge will prove a good mental and physical test.

Battling early game turnovers, Ohio State got off to a bit of a slow start with 3 early giveaways.  The Buckeyes did a good job of beating the OD press, but had trouble with the entry passes to the post. OSU improved their status at the under-12 timeout by pulling ahead 13-12, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Maleeka Kynard. OSU had been working on using their superior height by running a double high post involving Ashley Adams and Martina Ellerbe. At the 8:14 mark, a trey by Ameryst Alston push the score to 22-14. McGuff has a well conceived game plan with the double-high. When the feed pass when into one post player, the other broke to the basket for a pass. Nicely planned.

At the under-4 mark, the Buckeyes still held a 30-21 lead. The teams played almost even for the remainder of the half, and OSU took a 36-26 lead at the half. For the first 20 minutes, OSU shot a respectable 48% from the field (13-27) and a very good 73% (8-11) from the foul line. The Buckeyes were fairly aggressive in the 1st half by driving the lane looking for easier shots and to draw fouls. The Buckeye aggressiveness had paid off at both end of the floor by causing 11 Lady Monarch turnovers and drawing 11 fouls. The aggressive Ohio State zone also paid off by limiting Old Dominion to 36% from the field. Of note, Lisa Blair saw some extended playing time. Although she seemed a bit uncomfortable at the offensive end, she played well on defense and did grab 4 defensive rebounds. All in all, a solid 1st half effort and results.

Still using their height advantage and aggressiveness the Buckeyes outscored OD 13-7 in the first six minutes.  One nice change up was OSU guards and post players looking to hit team mates in low post cuts. At about the mid-way point of the 2nd half. OSU moved the lead to 55-34, keyed by the maintained defensive pressure..  At this point, OD was 12-40 from the field and 1-19 from 3-pt range. However, by the time we got to the under-4 mark, OD’s offense started to heat up a bit and they had pulled to within 12 of Ohio State 59-57. McGuff had had enough at this point and called a time  out. In the final three minutes, his team responded and pushed the final margin to 75-60. A 6-0 run in the last 1:50 iced it for the home team.

Ameryst Alston led the Buckeyes with 19 points and was supported by Raven Ferguson who had 14 points and 6 rebounds. Lisa Blair, seeing extended action, contributed 6 rebounds. Darryce Moore had a stellar game with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shae Kelly led the Lady Monarchs with a dub-dub of 21 points and 16 rebounds.

Next up for the Buckeyes; Marist College, who defeated Bowling Green 74-60, earlier Friday afternoon. The OSU-Marist game will tip off at 8:30, as pointed out be reader Jim C in the Preview commentary. Big thanks to Jim for catching the tip-off correction and passing it on.

I was thinking about this game over coffee and there is one more thing I want to add.

The Buckeyes turned the ball over too many times (17) and Alston was good for her usual handful (5), but looking a bit deeper and the T/O’s weren’t that egregious. A significant number of them were the result of aggressive play, where the passer would pass to a cutting player and the pass would be not quite accurate enough to be handled. I can live with this type of turnover.

There were also 3-4 turnovers, probably attributed to Ameryst/Ferguson that were to Lisa Blair, who mishandled the pass. Lisa is just getting some playing time in and is still looking to get settled in on offense, so to me, this too is an ‘OK’ turnover
