Grappling Bucks Fall On The Road To #1 Penn State

Written December 15th, 2013 by Patrick

In a year that many fans expected the wrestlers of scarlet and gray to compete for a team national championship, let alone a B1G team championship, it got of to the worse of worse starts for the Buckeyes. When OSU signed one of the most talented freshman classes in OSU history that included Bo Jordan and Nathan Tomasello and their 8 combined state titles, many felt that OSU could put a lineup out there to not only challenge defending national and B1G champion Penn State, but beat them. Then came the news from Tom Ryan that they would redshirt not only Jordan and Tomasello, but returning all american Hunter Stieber. A very curious move to say the least.

Fast forward to today in State College, PA where the 6th ranked Bucks would open their B1G conference slate with the best in the country. The Buckeyes would have little to smile about on this day, including the first loss of the season for two time defending champion Logan Stieber. Stieber ranked number 1 in the country at 141 pounds hadn’t lost since since February 12th, 2012 when he lost to defending national champ Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State in the national duals. Stieber had a slim 2-1 lead heading into the 3rd period where 9th ranked true freshman Zain Retherford of PSU would gain one minute of riding time, tying the match at 2-2 and sending it into overtime. As the one minute over time came to a close, Retherford scored the takedown to secure the upset.

The two lone bright spots for the Buckeyes was at 133 and 197 pounds. Johnni DeJulius (133) continued his excellent season so far with a 3-2 win over James Gulibon of Penn State and returning all american Nick Heflin (197) won another close decision over Wesley Phipps 3-1.

The grappling Bucks travel north to Kent, OH on thursday to battle the Golden Flashes. Stop back on Thursday to catch a preview of this match and recap of the match afterwards.
