The UL-Monroe (ULM) enter Friday’s game with a 3-4 record, coming off a loss to Louisiana Tech 82-61 on Sunday. The Warhawks played the Bulldogs close in the 2nd half, getting outscored 35-31, but the 1st half was a disaster for them, getting outscored 48-30.  They are running a bit ahead of last year’s performance, where after 7 games the Warhawks were 1-6. Offensively, they average 71 points per game, while defensively allowing 70.

UL-Monroe will start a  2G/2F/1C lineup;  6’4″ Amos Olatavo and 5’11″ Nick Coppola start as guards, 6’7″ Tyler Ongwae and 6’6″ Jayon James as forwards and 6’8″ Marvin Williams at center; see table below.

Olatavo leads the team (15.6 PPG, 6.0 RPG), followed by Ongwae (13.6, 4.1), Williams (10.1, 4.6) and James (10.1, 7.4).  Point guard Coppola leads the team in assists at 4.6 per game, but also in turnovers at 3.0 per game. He handles the ball, but isn’t a scoring threat at 4.3 PPG on 29% FG/67% FT shooting.

Ohio State University Buckeyes

The #3 Buckeyes (12-0) got through the Gotham Classic field undefeated, wrapping up the weekend with as an exciting-game-as-you-cam-imagine win over Notre Dame 64-61 on Saturday. Lenzelle Smith Jr. snapped out of it in time to incredibly score all his 9 points in the last :45 of play to ignite (along with tough defense) the win.

Wrap-up

UL Monroe doesn’t appear to be playing that good of defense this season, certainly not to Ohio State’s standards, so if OSU has a game like 1st half versus Notre Dame, this game could be over early. Hopefully Lenzelle continues his +9 points/minute pace that he had on Saturday, but I’ll take something less. I would like to see the continuation of OSU moving the ball inside to provide Amir ample point-blank scoring opportunities.

Despite (see table) UL-Monroe having four players averaging double digits, this will be a horrible defensive matchup for them. As mentioned above, their point guard, Nick Coppola, poses no scoring threat at all, so this should free up Craft/Scott to slide into some passing lanes to disrupt the Warhawks’ front line scoring.
