Appalachian State University Mountaineers

Appalachian State University (ASU) enter Friday’s game at (2-7, 0-1) coming off a solid 83-60 win over Radford. The win snapped a 5-game losing streak. The Mountaineers are capable of good basketball, finishing last year with a record of 20-11, 13-7.  The Skyhawks seem to be flexible with their starting line-ups, but don’t be surprised to see a 2G/3F or 3G/2F starting five. Regardless, the Mountaineers are a fairly short lineup, with C/F 6’2” KeKe Cooper (9.6 PPG, 8.8 RPG) as their tallest player. Guard Katie Mallow (5’9”, 9.5 PPG) contributes from the backcourt, but the player to watch is 6’1” forward Maryah Sydnor who leads the Mountaineers in scoring at 22 PPG and rebounds with 9 per game. Her shooting accuracy is impressive; 48% from the field, 41% from the perimeter and 82% from the foul line.

Here are the Appalachian State Mountaineers:

Ohio State University

The Buckeyes are coming off an impressive, “everything clicking” win over UT-Martin, 82-60. This was a ‘well’ game; they shot well, rebounded well, moved the ball well, and played defense well. Amy Scullion had a breakout (hopefully) performance and Ashley Adams got her mojo back with significant playing time and the resulting significant performance.

And, here are your Ohio State Buckeyes:

Nbr Name Pos Hgt FG% 3Pt% FT% R/B A/G PPG
14 Ameryst Alston G 5’9″ 0.44 0.48 0.83 3.8 2.6 17.2

33 Ashley Adams C 6’5″ 0.45 .000 0.85 4.1 1.6 6.1
25 Amy Scullion G 6’0″ 0.33 0.50 0.80 5.2 1.2 2.8
22 Darryce Moore C 6’2″ 0.50 .000 .706 7.2 1.2 9.6
23 Martina Ellerbe F 6’2″ 0.43 0.19 0.86 4.7 1.2 8.6
31 Raven Ferguson G 5’11″ 0.32 0.17 0.78 6 2.1 9
12 Maleeka Kynard G 5’7″ 0.24 .400 .706 1.5 1.3 4.8
21 Lisa Blair C 6’6″ 43% .000 .000 2.7 0.0 0.5
15 Aleksandra Dobranic C 6’4″ 25% .000 .500 1 0.6 1.2

Wrap Up

This should be another good win for Ohio State, but then we’ve seen what happens when a  Big Ten team takes Appalachian State too lightly. Hopefully, the good shooting stays with this team. Hopefully, Ashley Adams will get more playing time => improved performance against a shorter team. The two things that we don’t have to ‘hope for’ is its continued tenacious defense and the wire-to-wire effort from this team.

The game is Friday at 7:00 PM EST in Value City Arena. IF you can’t make it to the game, it can be heard on radio 1460 AM.

I’m looking forward to seeing how we defend Maryah Sydnor. I expect that Martina Ellerbe is going to have the primary job of defending her as they have similar size and Ellerbe is also athletic enough to operate on the perimeter. Ashley Adams should definitely have room to operate on the offensive end due to the size difference and Amy Scullion could be set for another big game as Appy State lack of size will make defending a 6’0″ guard difficult.

Thanks, Charles, good points. Do you see possibility of Ferguson and/or Scullion rotating through to play some ‘D’ on Sydnor?
