Written January 22nd, 2014 by Ken

illiniThe #11  (for now) Ohio State Buckeyes (15-4, 2-4), have dropped four consecutive games in the last two weeks.  Next up are the Fighting Illini of Illinois (13-6, 2-4) on Thursday in Columbus. Both teams are in a bit of a funk right now, with both teams on four game losing streaks and both tied for 8th in Conference play with Northwestern.  Yep, that’s where we are.

University of Illinois

The Fighting Illini are in their 2nd year under John Groce.  Interestingly, at this point last season, Illinois’ record was similar to this year (14-5, 1-4), with their lone conference win coming against Ohio State. Last season the Illini (23-13, 8-10) made it to the 2nd round of the NCAA’s before a narrow loss to Miami.

Illinois averages 69 points per game on offense and gives up 64 per game. They run a 3G/2F lineup with Rayvonte Rice (6’4”), Tracy Abrams (6’2”) and Joseph Bertrand (6’6”) at the guard positions and Jon Ekey (6’7”) and Nnanna Egwu (6’11”) at forward. Rice (17.4) and Abrams (12.8) the Illini in scoring. The rebounding is spread out fairly evenly among Rice (5.9), Ekey (5.8), Bertrand (5.5) and Egwu (5.4). Abrams also contributes 3.4 assists per game.

Ohio State University Buckeyes

I don’t even know what to say at this point. The Buckeyes have strung together 4 consecutive losses, which hasn’t happened since the 2007-2008 season. In their current funk, Ohio State really only has two issues; offense and defense. Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln enjoyed the play..

Wrap up

Ohio State has a couple of kinks to work out. I have no idea how this game will turn out, but as a fan, I’m going to tune in on Thursday night with the hope there is some improvement.
