Darius Slade Is A Buckeye!!!!

Written February 5th, 2014 by MaliBuckeye

What would “second Christmas” be for college football fans without at least one present under the tree?

With much of the Ohio State 2014 Class wrapped up well before mid-January, the only speculation today was on what color windbreaker Coach Meyer would wear during the afternoon press conference.

Sure, there were other things that could have changed the perspective, but none more exciting than a last minute addition of a top ranked student athlete… and one that was believe to have been a “lock” for Sparty for a while.

New Jersey defensive end Darius Slade was expected to sign with Michigan State today, but informed the folks in East Lansing that he wanted to visit Columbus before making a final decision.  He had initially verballed to Nebraska, but “flipped” to Michigan State earlier this year.

The 6’5″, 235 pound senior from Montclair high school also held offers from Miami, West Virginia, and Penn State; it’s believed that his relationship with former Nittany Lion Larry Johnson solidified his commitment to Ohio State.

While “only” a three star by most recruiting services, Slade’s ability to get to the quarterback is undeniable- after the jump, you can see some of the 37 sacks he amassed over the past two seasons, as well as his ability to pressure an offensive gameplan:

That’s a pretty amazing “But wait, there’s more!!” added to a great NLOID for Ohio State.

We’re excited to have you as a part of The Dream14 class, Darius… Welcome to the Buckeye Family!

Good luck with Slade. Hope he doesn’t turn out to be another Seveon Pittman for you guys! Once he saw Craig Evans and Enoch Smith commit to us he knew he was in the backseat, not to mention McDowell. Don’t worry McDowell wil be wearing Green&White next season. See you guys next year in EL,expecting same result as B1G Championship Game!

    Well played…

In a lot of ways, you’re just like “Little Brother” in Ann Arbor… need coaches with OSU ties to be successful.

No unlike “lil bro”in AA, we’ve been to B1G Chanp games lately and Won! As for coaches, the smart ones become Spartans! Glad you guys were dumb enough to let MD go! But you guys keep on obsessing over “lil bro”, but in case you haven’t noticiced B1G Championships go thru EL!
P.S. your responses are as weak as the OSU “D” was against in December!

Jack. Congrats on snagging McDowell this year. It is noce to see another coach in the big ten growing a pair. Dantonio has done a hell of a job coaching up the lower rated guys he has gotten. I cant imagine how good MSU will be if he can start pulling in elite guys. Dont let that one get away. How about next year you guys play us as an undefeated top ten team? Now that we play you every year, I hope you can fill the void as the elite team we play every year, as Hoke seems to have given up.

Ryan- Yes looking forward to some more great games between the Buc’s&Sparty! As for the elite players after watching MD work the last 7 years the “star” rankings are a farce. Our latest “5 star” Lawrence Thomas has barely seen the field, before that Will Ghoulston another “5 star” had his motor run half the time. Give Md his 2&3 “star” guys and you get Leveon Bell, Kirk Cousins and Darqueze Dennard(2014 Jim Thorpe winner),etc.. His latest is a guy named Connor Cook(Hinkley Oh “2 star”) MVP Rose Bowl&B1G. The Game for the right to go to Indy looks like it will be 11/08 in EL. Would be great if we were both undefeated, however you guys have a much better chance with your schedule. We have to play the Ducks at Autzen Stadium 9/6.

You got it right, I think we have a new ‘the game’. You can definitely be correct on star status. The guys that don’t get all the hype tend to have something to prove. 5 Star guys, especially when they are the only one in a class can feel entitled. The right coaching staff can get more out of the lower rated guys attitude. The opposite can be said about other coaches, they can’t motivate the less talented guys, but can keep the highly rated guys pushing. Many of the Ohio State greats were 3 star guys out of high school; Laurinaitis, AJ Hawk, Simon… The services only measure talent, not so much heart and drive. That is why I’m a big fan of Mr. Slade here.

That’s a tough place to play… but I’m not sure that OSU’s non-conference games against Navy, VaTech, and Cincinnati with a rebuilding offensive line and questionable defensive back seven make the Buckeyes’ schedule a cake walk.

Ryan- Agreed, Slade could be a good one,we’ll see. Last 2 star DL we got from Jersey is a kid named Shilique Calhoun and he’s turned out pretty good. Definitely give me the 5 star coach, like MD or Urban all day long! Urban definitely sees that ” The Game” is not the only thing he’s got to worry about, judging from his press conference comments this week. We have achieved “Not To Be Named” status!
Mali- no “cakewalk” is true but Cincy and VaTech are at home, Midshipman on road and I’d take those all day long vs. going on the road to the Ducks(although planning to go and playing Bandon Dunes). When regular season hits you guys are only tested by Penn State on road, while we have both Nebraska and M before we meet. But I’ll assume that the two of us will be on top of our game and 11/08 will have a lot to say about who goes to Indy and maybe inaugural “Playoff”!!!
