Ohio State kept themselves in the race for the third seed in the Big 10 conference tournament with a win on the road at Penn State on Wednesday night. D’Angelo Russell scored 28 points and No. 23 Ohio State surged past the Nittany Lions for a 77-67 victory. Coach Thad Matta is now tied with […]
On this week’s show, we talk with David Blewett, who wrote The Pony Trap: Escaping the 1987 SMU Football Death Penalty.
Blewett, who was recruited by and played defensive end for SMU during the NCAA’s investigation and eventual Death Penalty ruling, brings us a unique account of one the most controversial decisions in collegiate sports history.
And when his daughter asked him if he did anything wrong by being a part of the SMU Program.
In our Interview, David talks about the process of answering that question and what he learned about the NCAA’s handling of the situation.
We also talk about the NCAA’s current handling of violations across college football and how Blewett believes that the NCAA is in serious trouble.
We touch on so many other subjects as well that pertain to his book and his experience with SMU, the Death Penalty, the NCAA, and his attempt to return to college football at age 45.
I highly recommend that you pick up The Pony Trap. Unlike Pony Excess, Dave Blewett brings you a perspective from the players point of view and a true look at what it can feel like being a nobody in an Association that banks on athletes to make a profit.
Also this week, our friend Dan Vest at Land Grant Holy Land stops by to preview the Big Ten Wrestling Championships, which will take place in Columbus this weekend at St. John Arena.
Vest breaks down the growth of the Buckeye program through head coach Tom Ryan. We also talk about the legacy that Logan Steiber will leave behind, Kyle Snyder’s chance at a national title, and what Ohio State needs to do on Saturday and Sunday to bring home a conference title.
As always, thanks for listening to The Buckeye Battle Cry Radio Hour. You can find us on iTunes, where we are always excited to hear your comments and feedback on the show. Feel free to rate and subscribe the show.

I agree with Jae’Sean, above. It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win. Ohio State rolled into University Park this evening looking to roll Penn State to maintain a shot at the #4 seed with one more game to play. They rolled back out with an exasperating (stay with me here) 77-67 win. The victory […]
Thad is checking his list. Are you on it? The Buckeyes roll into the Nittany Lions den looking for a win to move into a 4th place tie with Iowa. Penn State is just looking.. Tip off is 6:00PM EST. Television is BTN. Radio is 97.1. This LiveChat will be unmoderated. If you need a […]
Its March and that means its tournament time. The big dance is still two weeks away but up first are the conference tournaments and their exciting mix of teams playing for their NCAA tournament lives. The Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament kicks off today and eight teams have hopes of making the NCAA tournament as […]
Wisconsin got its first big challenge from a ranked Big Ten opponent this past week, dropping that challenge at Maryland. However, the Badgers clinched a share of the regular season title on Senior Day at the Kohl Center on Sunday. Did they do enough in that win over Michigan State to stay at the top […]
[Ed note: I’m going with same article image as the previous Pregame Glance: Penn State. It seemed to work.] On Wednesday evening, Ohio State (21-8, 10-6) visit Coach Pat Chambers and his Penn State Nittany Lions (15-14, 3-13) in the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park, PA.. At 10-6, Ohio State currently sits in a […]
With the Big Ten women’s basketball regular season wrapping up yesterday, that meant it was time for the annual announcement of the conference award winners and several OSU players walked away with honors. Freshman guard Kelsey Mitchell was the big winner on the night as she was chosen as the Player of the Year by […]
And the March to greatness continues, as Ohio State gets a verbal commitment from the seventh member of their 2016 recruiting class. As
When we last checked in with Ohio State’s men’s volleyball team, they were coming off a 2 win-1 loss week, which moved their record to 11-3, 5-1. This past week, the Buckeyes traveled to the desert for a two-match weekend schedule against the Grand Canyon University Antelopes. Ohio State 3, Grand Canyon 1 On Friday February […]
Basketball in the month of March was never meant to be pretty. At this point of the year, even championship caliber teams cannot lean on merit alone. Sunday’s win against Purdue was a great dress rehearsal for the Buckeyes, who came back from a horrible showing in the first half to defeat the Boilermakers 65-61. As […]
When it comes to basketball in March, the major difference between putting yourself into a position to win is all about adjustments. In a game that saw 5 ties and 10 lead changes, every decision mattered in Ohio State’s 65-61 victory over Purdue at Value City Arena. Down one with less than :30 to go, the […]
The Ohio State women’s basketball team came into today’s season finale riding a three game winning streak and looking for a chance to secure a third place finish in the Big Ten. Standing in OSU’s way was 23rd ranked Nebraska who wanted to send their seniors out with a win on Senior Day. The game […]
You know it’s March when the Buckeyes can bee seen doing there thing during the evening. If there has been an imperative win this season (I feel like i’ve typed that 20 times this year), then tonight’s match up with Purdue at home is one of them. Winning at home in conference play though hasn’t […]
