SI's Mandel: Evan Turner is POY

SI's Mandel: Evan Turner is POY

SI's Stewart Mandel, a great college football and basketball writer, explains today why he thinks Evan Turner should win Player of the Year this season. It's part of a debate with Andy Staples who says the award should go to John Wall of Kentucky. Mandel breaks down the statistical advantage that Turner has over Wall and everyone else in the country. Not only is he the best player this season, but Turner is putting up numbers not seen in college basketball in many years. He may not be the #1 pick in the NBA draft like Wall will be -- although he may be right behind -- but he's certainly had the better season statistically and is more valuable to his team. That makes him the clear favorite for POY.

Evan Turner's historic season

Evan Turner's historic season

SI.com's Andy Glockner says the Player of the Year debate shouldn't even be close; Evan Turner is having one of the best seasons in the modern history of college basketball. Turner has a chance to average 20 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists a game, which is a very rare feat in college basketball. Historical stats aren't readily available to check, but it's believed that Larry Bird at Indiana St. was the last player to accomplish that feat (and he didn't play major competition like Turner has).

Glockner also uses more sohpisticated stats to compare Turner to the other leading POY candidates -- John Wall, Damion James, and Wesley Johnson -- and he is clearly above all three. He says that basically Turner is a combination of the best traits of those three players: Johnson's shooting, Wall's dishing and James' rebounding.

While John Wall is having a great season and certainly deserves consideration for the award, if Turner continues to put up numbers like this then he should be the runaway winner as Player of the Year.

Early Top 25 for 2010

Early Top 25 for 2010

ESPN.com's Mark Schlabach has his very early top 25 for next season posted and Ohio State is at #2, right behind national champion Alabama. The Tide will lose some significant pieces on defense to the NFL (Cody, Arenas, and probably McClain) but will return most of their offense, including Mark Ingram and Julio Jones. The Buckeyes are also losing some good players on defense (but thankfully not Heyward and Chekwa) and have all but two starters returning on offense. Hopefully the win over Oregon will give us some national respect again and we have an early game against Miami to get a big nonconference win.

Boise St., Oregon, and Texas round out his top 5. Iowa comes in at 9 and Wisconsin at 10, so he has three Big Ten teams in his top 10 (just like this year's final AP poll). Penn St., who loses quaterback Daryll Clark and quite a few defenders, is the only other Big Ten team at 19. Penn St. also has a nonconference game at Alabama next season so they have a chance to help the Buckeyes out by knocking them off (although I'm not going to hold my breath for that one).

It's still very early, obviously, and many things will happen in the next 8 months which could change these rankings, but it's good to see OSU back up there near the top where we belong!
