tBBC Playlist - Jim Carroll Band

We haven't broken out this feature for a while (and with the B10/NCAA Tourneys coming, we wont have space for it for a while), so tonight is a good night to jam out.

In honor of Corey Haim, and since it's apparently 80s day here at tBBC, we bring you The Jim Carroll Band with one of my favorite 80s tunes "People Who Died"

Classic tune.

If you ever saw "The Basketball Diaries" with Leonardo DiCaprio, that was the story of Jim Carroll.  It was a great movie about a true poet.  Check it out if you haven't already.

tBBC Playlist - Mad World

We haven't hit the playlist for a few days, so I'm going to go back to the well.

Tonight's song comes from one of my favorite movies of all time, Donnie Darko (DD is always, without fail, in my list of Top 5 movies to see before you die).  It's a cover song from Gary Jules entitled Mad World.  Originally performed by Tears For Fears, it was given a twist for Donnie Darko and the tune was slowed down heavily.  The outcome is haunting, as anybody who has seen DD can attest to.

I wanted to show you the closing scene from the film, which features Mad World uncut.  But there's a spoiler in that scene, and I don't want to dissuade anybody from seeing it.

So here's the video that Jules' released for the song.  Not as haunting as that scene, but still an amazing song.

Incidentally, this song will also be in another film soon.  Next Friday, it will be in "The Crazies", which is a remake of a 1973 George Romero film.  The original was trying to expand on Romero's "Night Of The Living Dead", from a different perspective.

tBBC Playlist - Super Bowl halftime shows

With the Super Bowl behind us, let us look back at what I consider to be the best halftime show in the history of the game.  No, not The Who....that was horrific.  I would have rather seen Up With Everything...

I'm referring to Prince. Enjoy....I sure did

tBBC Playlist - Weezer - The Good Life

I'm really beginning to love this feature.  I had a background in radio, and I do miss sharing my favorite music with my readers.

Tonight's guest is Weezer...IMHO one of the best bands of the past two decades.  In 1997, I was lucky enough to see them play an acoustic set in front of 50 people in Knoxville, Tennessee.  I was working at an alternative station down there, and they played a special invite-only show for us as part of a deal for playing their latest single in heavy rotation (yes, payola exists in a BIG way).

Here's my favorite Weezer tune, "The Good Life"

tBBC Playlist - Army Of Anyone

Three years ago, a minor splash was made by a band that should have been MUCH bigger.  Unfortunately, radio didn't notice them and they remained a dirty little secret to the masses that may have adored them if they had been given their due.  Their name was Army Of Anyone, and their lineup was inspiring;

Since 1989, when I first saw Nine Inch Nails open up for Peter Murphy, I've been a big fan of everything Richard Patrick put together....and I don't think the DeLeo brothers are capable of making bad music.  So when I first got my hands on an AoA song, I was hooked.

Take my word for it, they were amazing in concert.  However, my words can't do them justice, so take a look for yourself.  Here's Army Of Anyone doing "It Doesn't Seem To Matter" live.

If you have the time, check out their only CD, a self-titled track on Columbis records.  Their live videos are all over YouTube as well.

Do yourself a favor and enjoy.  You will thank me tomorrow.

tBBC Playlist: AiC

For  some reason, I've been thinking about flooding and such today. Wonder what that means?

This CD (Dirt) had been in my CD player since it came out. I was in grad school at the time, and just couldn't get enough of Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc.

After grad school, I moved back to the Midwest in the summer of 1993. My folks have moved from Ohio to Illinois, just north of St. Louis. In the fall of 93, I took weekends to be a part of the efforts before and after the Mississippi/Missouri river flooding. And yes, "Dam That River" was a part of my daily playlist.

That same summer, I caught Lollapalooza at Deer Creek in Indiana and finally got to enjoy AiC up close and personal. The video above is from Orlando- in Indy, they opened with "Them Bones" as the next to last act of the concert (Primus closed). They managed to sneak onstage and start "Them Bones" with lights and sound and fury and... scared the crap out of me. Pure awesomeness.

I was also living in Seattle when Layne was found dead of an overdose. No surprise to those who knew him, I'm told, but it still took away part of my life.

tBBC Playlist - Fuel

First of all, we're changing the name of our music feature to "tBBC Playlist".  It just sounds better.

Tonight's feature is a crossover between two of my favorite artists.

Fuel was first formed in 1989, but didn't see mainstream success until 1997 when Sony Records discovered them and gave them a good push towards radio.  Amazing songs like "Shimmer", "Jesus Or A Gun", and "Hemorrhage (In My Hands)" made their music a big part of my personal playlist.  Then in 2006 they became heroes of mine when they allowed their song "Bad Day" to stay on the Ohio State/Texas video that eventually gave birth to this very website.  YouTube placed a temporary hold on that video pending artist approval, then a week later the hold was removed.  Thanks, Fuel.  Love ya.

Elton John has been one of the world's most biggest stars for 4 decades, but I didn't realize how much I enjoyed his music until last year.  I was in Las Vegas with my ex-girlfriend and we scored tickets to see his "Red Piano" show at Caesar's Palace.  It was nearly a two hour show and I knew and loved every song he performed that night.  I was shocked at how much of his music I was familiar with.  Since that night, he's been moved into my "favorite artists" on my Droid's music system.

Performing their own version of Elton John's "Daniel", here's Fuel.  Enjoy!

tBBC Playlist: In The Air Tonight

Allow me to introduce the greatest pregame song ever!

Still gives me the chills from when I warmed up to it in a little place called Beaver Stadium in State College, PA.

In 2005 the sixth ranked Buckeyes waltzed into Happy Valley to face the sixteenth ranked, undefeated Nittany Lions.  A showdown under the cover of darkness with only a Penn State "white out" to light our way.  The ground literally shakes when the teams take the field as 108,000 fans go bananas, WE ARE --- PENN STATE!

Cue the music and cue the adrenaline...it's game time.

Sidenote: don't lie to me, every time the drums kick in I know you're rockin' out with some air drums.  I believe it's an unwritten rule, or maybe it's actually written.  I'll get back to you on that.
