When we last reported on the intrepid Ohio State men’s golf team, they were showing signs of life with several improved Spring performances and prepping for the Boilermaker Invitational. Well, the work paid off with the Buckeyes finishing in 5th place as a team and Boo Timko finished 4th in the individual medal play. Timko put together rounds of 76-66-71. The highlight was probably Frederick Hammer’s hole-in-one (4-iron, 220 yds) in the final round. Although Hammer finished t-47th (of 81 golfers) his ace buoyed his spirits, no doubt. I know it would mine..
A couple of thoughts. First, a 220 yard par-3 is an obscenely long par-3. I would need a lot more club than a 4-iron to reach it. Although there are long odds (5,000 – 1, low handicap amateur) there is a good bit of luck to get an ‘ace’, but it starts with the tee shot. If it’s well struck and on line, “luck” will tend to side with you.
The Buckeyes ended the 1st round of the 3-round event tied for 12th place (of 15 teams), then moved up to 7th place after the 2nd round before finishing the weekend in 5th.
Next up for the Buckeyes is a trip to French Lick, IN on May 2-4 for the Big Ten Championships.
