Ohio State stopped a 3-game losing streak by edging a game Army Black Knight team Friday evening 59-56. Ameryst Alston led the Buckeyes with 18 points and was more than aided by Raven Ferguson’s double-double ( 13 pts, 11 rebounds) and Martina Ellerbe with 10 points and 7 rebounds.
In the first minute and a half, Ohio State jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then withstood an Army charge as the Black Knights ground away over the next ten minutes to hold a 20-16 mark at the under-8 timeout. OSU clamped down on defense for the last four minutes of the half, limiting Army to 2 points, to retake the lead at the break, 30-26.
The Black Knights came out in the 2nd half and took control of the game with Kelsey Minato making two 3-pointers in the first two minutes to tie the game at 32 each. Army continued their dominance for the next 12 minutes, expanding their lead to 50-40 before Martina Ellerbe’s jumper was backed up by Raven Ferguson’s 3-pointer to pull OSU within 5 points 50-45.
Ameryst Alston made her 2nd free throw at the :31 mark to give OSU their first lead in a long time at 57-56. Two Raven Ferguson FT’s at the :05 mark provided the final margin of victory.
Guard Kelsey Minato led all scorers with 27 points while Ohio native (Dayton) Olivia Schretzman provided 12 points and 7 rebounds for Army.
As you see from the box score, this was an even, closely fought game that was not decided until the last seconds of play. Army outshot Ohio State from 3-point range (31% – 17%) but the difference was at the foul line as OSU went to the line 20 times vs 12 for Army and salted the game away with their last 6 points coming from the line.
OSU’s record is now 7-5 with their next game a Sunday contest 2:00 PM at Cincinnati. Army is now 7-3.
After a heartbreaking loss on Sunday against the Gonzaga Zags, the Buckeyes host the Black Knights of Army Friday evening. Right now, these are two teams moving in opposite directions. Ohio State (6-5) has lost three consecutive games. These have been against some very tough UConn, Maryland and Gonzaga teams, so they are soon do for a break in the schedule. Friday night may not may be that game. The Black Knights are (7-2) following their Wednesday against Penn. The loss snapped a 7 game win streak.
