The Buckeyes visited West Lafayette this evening and left Mackey Arena with a 74-64 win over Purdue and Thad Matta’s 100th conference victory. The Bucks used good shot selection and high-energy hustle to grab the lead and never relinquish it again. The Buckeyes rode the scoring of DeShaun Thomas again, who picked up 22 points and 7 rebounds, Aaron Craft (15) and Evan Ravenel (11). Purdue responded with scoring from Terone Johnson (18), A.J. Hammons (13), and Ronnie Johnson (11).

The first half started out as a high-paced affair. The Buckeyes came out of the gate with a lot more energy than they have shown all season, and Purdue seemed all too happy to play an up-tempo battle. Unfortunately for the Boilermakers the Buckeye’s shooting made a sudden and surprising reemergence. OSU hit nearly 65% at one point during the period, but had to do it without Aaron Craft who … [Read More]

Let’s not beat around the bush here. Ohio State got it handed to them by Illinois on Saturday afternoon. The Buckeyes came out sluggish and were not ready to play as they fell to the Illini,74-55. Things in the Big Ten are not easy this season, least of all games played on the road. After a dismal performance against Illinois, Ohio State will look to rebound, on the road, against Purdue on Tuesday.

A scary thing for Buckeye fans is that only last week Purdue defeated the same Illinois team which just blew out Ohio State. Purdue does not have the talent it has had in years past and the Boilermakers come into this … [Read More]

Air it out. Well, Braxton did some work on the passing game, and probably would have thrown more passes than he has in any game all season if he hadn’t gotten hurt. Considering Guiton tossed 10 (not counting his spike), that matches up fairly well.

The obvious… The defense actually did a pretty damn fine job. The first touchdown pass was fairly boneheaded, and Purdue victimized us on the edge with the throw-back passes and screens (but, honestly, we saw that coming). Most importantly, when it mattered most, they got the job done.

Special Teams keep being special. The special teams certainly had an impact. The positive side were the two blocked kicks. The negative side was the 100-yard kickoff return.

No sleepy nooner. It was sleepy for the better part of 4 quarters. It woke itself right up at the end, though.

Color coordinate. The pink out looked … [Read More]

Q. I know you love Kenny Guiton. But 47 seconds left, 61 yards, no timeouts, backup quarterback, what are the odds of that?
COACH MEYER: I knew it from no. (Laughter) did I know that was going to happen? How much time was left?

Q. 47 seconds.
COACH MEYER: 47 seconds, no timeouts. I just can’t say enough about it. But it’s kind of recurring theme every time we bring up his name.

It’s the same thing as a coach. He prepares. We call it competitive excellence. Competitive excellence is simply when you work so hard, when your number’s called, because of so many reps you can make a play.
It was bound to happen eventually, but the Buckeyes evaded it.

The Purdue Boilermakers came in with exactly the right gameplan to attack the Buckeyes. They attacked the edge all day against the OSU defense and found easy yardage when they did so. They also used good line and linebacker play to help shutdown the OSU running game, something that they hadn’t been able to do to anyone else all season.

But the Buckeyes had their secret weapon, “Smooth Jazz” Kenny G, who helped secure the 29-22 win in overtime. Caleb TerBush had a solid day with 17/25 passing for 224 yards 2 touchdowns and an interception. Braxton Miller responded with his worst showing of the season, completing 9 of 20 passes for 113 yards and a pick, and running 12 times for only 47 yards. The Buckeyes ultimately gave up the ball four times to the Boilermakers, which is … [Read More]

Air it out. I’d like to see Braxton Miller get back to work on the passing game. Test Purdue’s corners with some shots deep.

The obvious… All around improvement on defense.

Special Teams keep being special. Return a kick/punt, block a punt of field goal, special teams keep having an impact. It’s contagious and, maybe more importantly, can get into opponents heads before a game even starts.

No sleepy nooner. The game kicks-off at high noon, no excuse for The Shoe not to be electric and rocking. This team is 7-0, you’re there anyway, don’t sit on your hands and not be loud.

Color coordinate. “Pink Out The Shoe” is the theme this week to support breast cancer awareness. Typically these color coordinate attempts are a terrific failure at Ohio Stadium. This one shouldn’t be. Get a pink t-shirt or sweatshirt and wear it to the game.
