Dreaming Of The Next Five

My Dream Sheet!!!

My Dream Sheet!!!

With all the social media and recruiting websites  out there, I must admit that I have issues with recruiting rankings.

I mean the kids love it, but to me it just does not matter as much as The Ohio State coaches evaluation of said recruits.

I believe in most cases, coaches recruit to fill specific needs in regards to the depth chart.

With that being said, you will always have a handful of players you give scholarships regardless. Once you get to a certain point in your class though — just like the NFL draft – you take the best available players and let them earn a spot on the depth chart.

Now I want to stress that in the same breath, the staff needs to get the best players in Ohio every year. This keeps the border protected around the Buckeye State and somewhat makes it a huge pipeline.

Who I would love to see be the next five commitments to The Ohio State in the class of 2015?

Here is my list, or as we called it in the Air Force, my “Dream Sheet”.

1. Josh Sweat, DE, Oscar Smith HS,  Chesapeake, VA. — Sweat has drawn comparisons to Jadeveon Clowning due to his freakish athletic ability and sudden burst.  Last year, the 6’4’’, 240-pound All-American put himself at the center of the national recruiting radar, when he totaled a whopping 22 sacks and 94 tackles, including 31 tackles for loss. Although it’s going to be a dogfight to land this recruit, he did enjoy his visit to Ohio State.

Only question left is, does Ohio State get an Official Visit? It also helps that Hilliard and Cornell are recruiting dynamos.

WRR: A Little This and That

Recruiting for the 2015 class is becoming another sequel in “The Fast and The Furious” chain. In my honest opinion, I could see Ohio State at 10-12 commits by the end of July and still be in on the other announcements later down the road.

Here is how I see it playing out:

  • The TE that everyone wants and who wants to commit everywhere, Chris Clark, will visit today as being reported. He says he will choose between Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan and North Carolina (where he committed earlier this year). He is going to visit each of the schools one more time before announcing at The Opening on July 8th. Let’s hope Urban can close the deal here, but it’s anyone’s guess with this kid.
  • The Buckeyes received a verbal commitment from Tyler Green, who earned his offer at camp.  He is an impressive physical young man at 6’3″ and 195lbs.  I have heard comparisons of Green to Malik Hooker from last year’s class.  Green’s upside is huge, and getting a long ranging Safety who tackles and can cover is paramount. He’ shown that ability at this past camp. I always love the recruits that commit to Ohio State because they want to be Buckeyes! The other thing not to be overlooked here is that he attends DeMatha Catholic High in Maryland.  DeMatha Catholic is consistently producing top recruits.  Getting our foot in the door, with Larry Johnson recruiting that state, is a great thing.
  • Now on to the Big Guys in the trenches. By the end of his manic Monday, Grant Schmidt realized he wanted to be a Buckeye and committed to play for Coach Meyer. At 6’6, 275lbs, this is by no means a stretch by the staff here.  Schmidt came to camp and showed Meyer’s personnel enough that they took his early commitment on Monday. Schmidt will be the first player from South Dakota to play for Ohio State.

Weekly Recruiting Review: All Smiles

It has been reported and confirmed that Joe Burrow committed to The Ohio State Buckeyes! That said, Burrow will most likely be the only quarterback taken this year unless Torrance Gibson comes this way.  Some may see that as a bad thing, but with 2016 being a strong group of quarterbacks and Danny Clark coming in 2017, I think we could be in a much worse situation. To top it off, Burrow’s commitment has landed us a visit from Chris Clark, and he is working to help recruit a lot of these national kids! As a side bar, both Burrow and Clark showed up to the Elite 11 yesterday decked out in The Ohio State gear!!! (all smiles)

Then there is Damien Harris being interviewed here (all smiles):

“It’s still kind of cool the way things go with Coach Meyer,” Harris told cleveland.com Sunday, while attending a Nike Football Training Camp at Ohio State. “As a kid growing up, I’d see him on TV and I was like, ‘Man, he’s the man.’ And now I get to be real cool with him. We walk into a basketball game together, we just get to enjoy life together right now – maybe for the next four years. It’ definitely been a blessing. I get to be looked at as important enough to spend time with one of the greats of all time. It’s definitely an honor. I don’t take it for granted. I’m real thankful for it.”

If you have read all the reports you know that Justin Hilliard is now an OSU lean, in my opinion. Why else would you be recruiting other players to come to OSU, and befriend Raekwon McMillian. Remember, Sam Hubbard is an ex-teammate and very good friend (all smiles).

Now we get to Matthew Burrell, the big OL out of Virginia. This young man is 6’6, 290lbs and I would now say a Buckeye lean after his visit this past weekend.  I heard he absolutely loved it and will be back (all smiles). Read More

Ohio State Recruiting- Spring 2014 Guesses

Written April 17th, 2014 by Jim

It’s still too early to know the exact numbers in the class, especially the numbers they would take at specific positions (and that is variable anyway) but I feel compelled to put together a list.

Wimbush And Friend

QB: 1. Brandon Wimbush, 2. Torrance Gibson

QB is pretty easy. They’d like to take two (in line with not taking any in ’16 to clear the way for Danny Clark in ’17) and their top targets are Wimbush and Torrance.

Wimbush is down to Penn State and Ohio State with the whole head/heart thing but it seems likely that Ohio State will win that battle- especially the longer it drags out.

Torrance is going to go down to signing day but Meyer has already worked his magic and is amongst the top schools without a visit. Getting him on campus is going to be huge and then we will go from there.

RB: 3. Damien Harris, 4. LJ Scott (OH)

RB is also fairly easy. It looks like they are going to take two with the top target being Damien Harris. I personally would give the nod for the second spot to LJ Scott given the whole in-state thing, but there are plenty of offers and alternatives floating around.

WR: 5. Van Jefferson

Unlike QB and RB, WR is hard to get a handle on. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but as far as I can tell Van Jefferson is just about the only guy with positive OSU buzz surrounding him right now.

With Johnnie Dixon, Noah Brown, Parris Campbell, Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, James Clark, Jalin Marshall and Dontre Wilson all coming in over the past two recruiting classes, it seems likely they won’t be targeting too many receivers in ’15, but will they only take one?

Plus you have the ATHs like Eric Glover-Williams and Christian Kirk factoring in.

I have no idea, so I’ll go with the safe pick for now. Read More
