The Hunter Needs Silver Bullet Points

Written September 5th, 2013 by MaliBuckeye

Well, given Coach Meyer’s perspective for this season, the soundtrack for today should be pretty obvious. There’s the awesome option, and the Ah!Sum! possibility. Happy Thursday, Buck-aroos!

Heart you, Dee Dee McCall

Buckeye 411

  • Health Update- According to Coach Meyer, CJ Barnett will be back in action this week against SDSU, and Corey Lindsley will see more time; although the staff will continue to be cautious with his recovery.
  • Back On The Attack? Although he had a good practice today, Bradley Roby has not yet been bumped up to the starter at corner this weekend. Rod Smith, curiously left off the depth chart released on Tuesday, finds himself on several special teams this weekend, which is a pretty good sign.
  • Isn’t That Special- A lot has been made of Ohio State’s practice of having players earn playing time by being a part of Coach Coombs’ charges for a time. If you want to play, prove that you’ve got the heart and passion… I like it, and am hopeful Bri’onte Dunn (who seems to have been singled out this week) will rise to the challenge.
  • Hybrid No More? Coach Meyer mentioned that Dontre Wilson is more of a receiver at this point than a running back.
  • Getting Defensive- San Diego State runs a 3-3-5 Stack Defense, which is a bit different than what the Buckeyes have seen in the past. However, several players mentioned that Buffalo chose a similar look on Saturday, so they feel more prepared. That being said, don’t be surprised to see quite a bit of unorthodox pressure coming from the Aztecs.
  • The Chase- While Ohio State dropped in the AP poll to #3 (I guess beating an FCS school is a good idea, huh NikeU?), they stayed at the #2 slot in the Coaches’ poll.  Oh, and they’re #1 on the Facebook poll… which reminds me; can we be friends? Read More

Wednesday Night Rumble: Afternoon Delight

Written September 4th, 2013 by Jason

Week one is in the books and the Buckeyes are 1-0. As is typical of Buckeye Nation, there is a lot of overreaction to just how that first win managed to come about, both positively and negatively. We’ll look back at Buffalo and ahead to the San Diego State Aztecs. So without further ado, it’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

Buffalo Soldiers

I have to admit, the Bulls were a little better than myself or likely any of you were willing to give them credit for prior to the game. We all threw out our fake cautious “They’re on scholarships too…” and “Any given Saturday…” and “If the Buckeyes aren’t ready…” mumbo jumbo but there isn’t one of us who truly thought Buffalo would give the Buckeyes are game let alone stand a shot at winning.

The Bulls were worthy opponents

The Bulls were worthy opponents

I’m not saying that they ever actually did have a shot at winning during the game itself, what I am saying is they didn’t back down, fold up the tents, collect their paycheck and get their hind quarters out of Ohio as easily as everyone thought they would and should be commended for it.

Getting ready for the Aztecs

By now you’ve all no doubt discussed till you were blue in the face the things you liked on Saturday and the improvements you want to see this week. I’m here to tell you that San Diego State, while on scholarship, on any given Saturday, and if the Buckeyes aren’t ready, still have absolutely no shot this week in Columbus.

The Aztecs dropped their home opener 40-19… to Eastern Illinois. Yikes!

Based on what I have read about them and their ridiculous loss last week compounded by Ohio State not looking sharp at times in their own home opener and having to suffer Urban Meyer’s wrath this week, Brady Hoke’s former team should be decimated in Ohio Stadium. Read More

2013 Ohio State Football Captains Named

Written August 27th, 2013 by Eric

OSU's QB Captain Tandem.

OSU’s QB Captain Tandem.

After a vote of the team, the Ohio State Football team announced its Captains for the season. Eight players were chosen in all, after what was reportedly a very close vote. Per the release, Meyer told the team, “It’s the first time I’ve done something like this. We had eight individuals receive a lot of votes.”

Those eight individuals were:

  • Jack Mewhort – OL
  • Corey Linsley – OL
  • CJ Barnett – S
  • Kenny Guiton – QB
  • Christian Bryant – S
  • Corey “Philly” Brown – WR
  • Braxton Miller – QB
  • Ryan Shazier – LB

These represent the “game captains” for the season. At the end of the year, a handful of these will be selected as the “Season Captains”.

The first four on the list are fifth-year seniors. Bryant and Brown are both fourth year seniors, while Miller and Shazier are both true juniors. Five of the captains come from the offense, and three from the defense.

This is the first time since Todd Boeckmann in 2008 that OSU has had a Quarterback named captain – and two of them made the list.

Wednesday Night Rumble: Dynamic Duo

Written April 17th, 2013 by Jason

The Scarlet and Grey game for 2013 is in the books. Who stood out? Who can change the game? It’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

Scarlet and Grey 2013

Remember back around the last week of December and on through New Year’s when everyone was upset and moaning about the Buckeyes not being bowl eligible? Seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it? I told you time would fly by, and here we are with summer camp and the 2013 season opener as the next events on the Ohio State football schedule. Game-of-Thrones

Like a lot of you I wasn’t able to logon to the Big Ten Network’s live stream of the game or listen to the radio play-by-play online. I followed along on twitter for some of the pregame and a little bit of the first quarter and decided to wait it out and stay away from it until the BTN broadcast at 7 on Saturday night. Then I didn’t even have a chance to see it at 7. Good thing for DVR’s. Read More

What Do You Want To See On Saturday? Miami Edition

Written September 16th, 2011 by Eric

It’s the first official test of the season for the young Buckeyes, and they get an infusion of some of their best talent with the return of Jordan Hall, Travis Howard, and Corey “Pittsburgh” Brown to the field.  Let’s see what the guys wanted for tomorrow.

Mali

Lots of people want to see this guy go against Miami.

Brax Attack. It will mean that a) he’s healthy, b) we’re in a position to play him (up on the scoreboard?) c) Miami has to figure out what to do next… plus, it’ll keep him further away from those pesky headsets.

Jacory Harris’ New Name. I’d be ok with “Ja-five-ry”… he’ll have almost an extra week to prepare, I’d like for him to visit Howard Island at least once.

Florida Pride. A number of Buckeyes from the “Sunshine and Tourist and Old Retirees State”, it’d be great for Brewster and Hyde and Sabino and Berry and Howard to have big games at home.

Game Commentary. With what’s been going on in Columbus and Coral Gables, I wonder how much time will be spent actually discussing football (oh, and not re-hashing the Fiesta Bowl)?  I’m also curious to see, since this is an “ACC on ESPN” game, if the magnitude of commentary will reflect the magnitude of allegations (8 players vs 60+).

No False Starts. I’ll stop asking once we meet this goal.

It's coming soon.

It has been a long and arduous off season for Buckeye Nation.

The anticipation and anxiety surrounding the August 12th NCAA hearings alone are enough to put someone on edge. How severely will the NCAA ultimately punish Ohio State for its transgressions?

We can only speculate and hope for the best.

Next up was the resignation of all-time great Jim Tressel and the resulting uncertainty surrounding Ohio State’s next head coach. Luke Fickell is a great defensive coach and an even better Buckeye, but will he be the long term answer to Ohio State’s head coaching vacancy?

We can only speculate and hope for the best.

Finally, what initially looked like a 2012 recruiting class for the ages is quickly turning into another source of concern for fans. As I have mentioned previously, it is still much, much too early to give up on the class, but that doesn’t mean it won’t be a source of stress for the next several months. Will Luke Fickell (or the next head coach) be able to salvage the 2012 recruiting class before signing day?

We can only speculate and hope for the best.

Clearly there will be plenty of uncertainty and things to worry about in the coming months. If you are like me, however, you are already so sick and tired of worry and speculation that you have entered a state of comatose. Obviously, being in a state of comatose isn’t very much fun, so I have decided to switch my coping mechanism.

While this off-season has dragged on to the point that it seems like it will never end, the light at the end of the tunnel is coming into view and the season is fast approaching.

Rather than worry about things outside of our collective control, it’s time to refocus our energies on getting excited about the football season that kicks off in 65 days.

Here is a list of some things that I am most excited about for this season and beyond. Read More
