Top 25: The Week in Review & The Week Ahead

The revolving door that is known as the Top 25 continued to revolve this week. 4 of the 5 Top 5 teams all loss, including Kansas who has now lost three in a row. In addition to the top 5 teams laying an egg, 14 of the 25 teams lost at least one game this week, with 5 of them not even picking up a single win. All was not bad though in the Top 25 world. There were several great games and several overtime games, including a stunning 5 overtime in the Big East. The Miami Hurricanes continued to come on like gang-busters and very well could be in the Top 5 when all is said is done with the polls this week. History: The Sugar Bowl, one of the original four BCS bowl games, has been played annually since January 1st, 1935. It is tied with the Orange and Sun bowls as the second oldest bowl game, behind the Rose Bowl. The game is currently played in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans where it has lived since 1975. Originally, the game was played in Tulane Stadium in New Orleans which closed the same month the Superdome opened. Tulane Stadium was famous for having hosted three of the first nine Superbowls (1970, 1972, 1975).

Florida Dismantles Ohio State in all Phases of the Game

Several Big Ten teams played bowl games today at around the same time, and nearly every one of them struggled . Ohio State joined that club in their game against the Florida Gators, losing 24-17. The Buckeyes valiantly attempted to stage a comeback in the game down 14 with 3 minutes left, but were unable to secure the onside kick with under a minute left. Braxton Miller showed some impressive passing at the tail end of the game, ending the game 18/23 for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns.

This is the first time since 1897 that Ohio State has had 7 losses in a single season, and the first time since 1946 that the team has lost 4 games in a row. It is the first time since 1988, John Cooper’s first season, that the Buckeyes have suffered a losing season.

A Will To Win - This is the first time since 2004 that Ohio State isn’t in a BCS bowl…. With a whole new fold in place for the upcoming season, it’s important to go out and play like you want to win this meaningless bowl. It just sets up momentum heading into the spring and leaves a lasting mark.

Seniors and Juniors Play their Best - Seniors and Juniors, this is the last time you will ever compete in a bowl situation ever again. Cherish it. Enjoy it. Play your heart out like your life depended on it. It might just be another bowl to everyone else, but for you guys– it’s your last chance to compete in the “post-season.”

The Coaching Search: Urban Meyer

This series took an interesting turn during the last week with the announcement that Gene Smith was removing the “Interim” tag from Luke Fickell. It’s possible that the University has decided that Fickell is their guy and that any future search will be unnecessary.

At this point, though, a future coaching search is still in the plan. Until that explicitly changes, we’re going to keep running these articles because, honestly, you really want to know.

We’ve looked at a number of different possibilities for the future of the Ohio State head coaching position so far. We hit the obvious answer of Fickell first, and followed it with the nearly unheard-of possbility of Lovie Smith. Just last week we took a look at one of the big possible names for the job, Nebraska’s own Bo Pelini.
