Wednesday Night Rumble: The Chase Is On!

Written October 16th, 2013 by Jason

The bye week is over and the Buckeyes now await a home matchup on Saturday against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The second half of the season is about to begin and we’ll look ahead to what needs to happen for the Buckeyes to make a trip to Pasadena to play for the National Championship. It’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

Handle your own businessimage

The Hawkeyes come into the Shoe on Saturday well rested having sat through their own bye this past weekend. The last time they saw action was a 26-14 loss to Michigan State in Iowa City. Overall they come in at 4-2 and, to be honest, nothing really impresses you or stands out about Kirk Ferentz 2013 Hawkeye team.

The Hawkeyes not being anything special means the Buckeyes lose a shot at a quality win. Quality wins and strength of schedule are what goes into those BCS numbers that will determine if an undefeated Ohio State team gets to play for the crystal ball. I realize this is a foreign concept to a lot of people, but it is a real possibility that the Bucks could wind up 13-0 and on the outside looking in. At this point it actually seems like the likely scenario after the conference championship games are played and the bowls are selected.

For the Buckeyes to be invited to Pasadena to play in the Rose Bowl National Championship presented by Orange Juice, LED Televisions and God knows what else, they must obviously finish unbeaten. Another thing that Buckeye fans seem to dislike is winning with style points i.e. running up big point totals. And the Buckeyes would definitely be well advised to take advantage of any opportunity whereby that is an option.

Breaking it down, how I see it

Ok, so if the Buckeyes going undefeated and being left out of the championship game is looking more and more like a likely scenario then who are the teams that will be holding them out? I decided I’d break it into some groups… Read More

We’re number TWO!?

Number Two… For Now

As a new college football season approaches, most fans are full of anticipation of what the 2013 season will hold for their beloved team. Fans are full of anticipation, eager for August 31st to get here so we can put shoe to leather.

One of the rights of passage for college football fans is the ever popular preseason polls. Some publications release their polls early in the summer, only to leave fans drooling with anticipation for the “official AP and Coaches poll”. When the first Coaches poll was released a few weeks back, fans combed over, analyzed, and dissected every aspect of 1-25 and who “also received votes”.

Most Buckeye fans were very pleased with their preseason #2 ranking, right behind the 2011 and 2012 national champion Alabama Crimson Tide. We will take a look back over the past 14 seasons and see how much preseason rankings actually mean when it comes to winning a national championship. Read More

Silver Bullet Points Reads Up

Books. Saving Lives For Years.

With the “off season” (or as Urban calls it- “Hunting Season”) upon us, SBP takes a bit of a different twist. Usually focused on news and updates from OSU press conferences and weekly preparation, during the off season, we’ll use this spot to affirm my ADD and help you stay on top of news from the national scene. In other words- things that you might have missed or will want to print to read during those boring meetings or  your “consulting” trips to the washroom. I read it so you don’t have to.

Bowl championship Series

But because the agreement between cable network and bowl series has to make you wonder where the relationship between ESPN and the football it pretends to cover begins and ends. Are they partners? Is this a legitimate subject-reporter situation? Once ESPN buys access to an event don’t they then turn from journalist to promoter?

Don’t answer.

Everyone already knows.

When ESPN selectively covers stories, as it does during a college football season, and attempts to dictate what is news and what is not to the public, how can any of us not be left wondering if they’re really reporting the news or simply protecting their bowl-week product? After all, they’re in this thing together now. When they’re slow to break a story, can we be sure why?

Charity Profile: Lending a Hand

Written July 1st, 2010 by Rob Harley

Team Harley - Helping Families Fight Brain Cancer

(614) Magazine and Travis Hoewischer wrote a great article on Harley Helping Hands, our charity designed to help families fight brain cancer.

Rob Harley, like over 20,000 others in this country, has experienced firsthand the devastation brain cancer can deal unto a family.

A former defensive back for the Ohio State football team, Harley watched his older brother Kit lose a valiant three-year fight this March. Fighting the disease itself has been a prolonged, expensive process for his brother’s family just on the physical front; tests, chemotherapy, prescriptions are the known overwhelming costs of medical care.

But, it’s the mortgage, the home modifications, even groceries that wreak as much collateral havoc on the lives of a patient’s family.

“All these charities are going toward awareness, for research, or for development of a drug; this is designed to go toward all the back-end stuff that you don’t hear as much about,” Harley said. “How would you know, unless you’ve been through it? It’s not a case of, ‘Hey you’re focusing on the wrong thing.’ Raising money for research is very important; it must go on. But, at the same time, it hits home more when you realize the families’ lives are being destroyed because of this disease.”

Harley Helping Hands will be holding its first annual golf outing at noon, Monday, July 19th at Heritage Golf Club (3525 Heritage Club Dr., Hilliard). The shotgun-start scramble will feature former Buckeyes and Columbus natives Simon Fraser and Brandon Joe as well as other former Buckeyes and current Blue Jackets. Ohio State’s Best Decade Ever?

Written May 6th, 2010 by Jim

As promised, here is a look at various ten year periods of Ohio State football.

1993-2002

The Cooper years, with some serious 2002 assistance from Tressel.

Record: 97-27-1 (.78226)

vs. Michigan: 4-6

Bowl Games: 4-5

Big Ten Championships: 3

National Championships: 1

All-Americans: 25

All-Big Ten: 51

Heisman Trophy: 1

I threw this one in mostly for fun and cheated by including 2002. Even with that, this ten year period is behind in all categories… but not by much.

The record against Michigan and in bowl games, as well as a lack of Big Ten championships,  is what really brings this decade down a notch. Read More
