We here at the Buckeye Battle Cry depend on you fans to make us the blog that we are.

My favorite feature that I have been involved in since joining in December of 2011 is this twitter interaction we have done. Wednesday Night Rumble: Orange Juice Ecstasy

Written January 8th, 2014 by Jason

Things didn’t go as expected in Miami. Players are deciding to stay or go. New recruits are on board. We’ll start putting a bow on the 2013 season. It’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

Orange Juice

Braxton Miller at the Discover Orange Bowl

Braxton Miller at the Discover Orange Bowl

By now you’re probably tired of hearing about what went wrong and what should or could have happened at the Orange Bowl on Friday night. I won’t deny it, I’m with you. Unfortunately there are a few things I think need discussed, or at least have my opinion weighed in on. Some are a bit out of the box.

I’ve read and heard a lot of people talk about how Clemson is a talented team, and that can’t be denied. I’ve read and heard people say that the better team won, and maybe there’s some truth to that.

The fact is that you can throw out whatever cliched line you want, the Buckeyes were winning at halftime 22-20. A lead that came about despite one of the worst halves of football we’ve seen since Urban Meyer took the controls. Ohio State came out of the locker room looking uninpsired and as though they really didn’t want to be in Miami at all. Of course Clemson errors played a big part in the Buckeye advantage, but no matter how you slice it up, they were leading at halftime.

The third quarter absolutely belonged to Carlos Hyde. I’m not sure what was discussed at the break, but the decision to come out and ride Carlos was simple and magnificent. The offensive live began getting huge movement as Hyde bullied behind them and brought the Buckeyes to a 29-20 lead with 5:50 to play in the 3rd. Camera shots on the Clemson sideline showed a team that was done. I had mentioned several times during the week that Clemson was prone to quit when a team leaned on them and took a lead, especially if they had been ahead early. It was happening. Read More

Silver Bullet Points Just Chills

Written January 8th, 2014 by MaliBuckeye

Well howdy do, Buckaroos! Long time no SBP!  Look, to make up for it I’ll give you two soundtracks for this week- one to celebrate 2014 and one that should make perfect sense.

Freeze!!

Buckeye 411

  • Farewell Shazier- Like I said, it’s been a while since I’ve shared your Wednesday with you; in that time Junior Linebacker Ryan Shazier announced that he was taking his talents to… You know what? Shazier’s to classy for that tripe. Ryan is foregoing his senior season and heading to the NFL.  While he’ll be missed on the field, his character and presence as a representative of the University may be his strongest lasting legacy.  Godspeed, Ryan.
  • Wither Braxton? Reports from this weekend announced that Miller had decided to stay for his senior season following the loss in the Orange Bowl. These were unofficial, however- the Miller family hasn’t said one way or another if XBrax360 was returning to Columbus. I can see it both ways- he has much development to do before he’d be successful in The League, but if you’re going to get pounded (with a new offensive line and missing Guapo), you might as well get paid for it.
  • This Is The Part where I mention casually that I played college football with Braxton’s dad.  Not that it means anything; we haven’t spoken since he graduated, but if Braxton goes pro my Buckeye name-dropping game loses some swag.
  • Spence For High-er? Sorry for the 80′s driven pun, but with Noah Spence’s suspension for the Orange Bowl a mystery at gametime, Tuesday’s news that he had actually tested positive for Ecstasy seemed very unusual. As you may know, it was initially reported as a performance enhancing substance, which is somewhat factual- the B1G characterizes MDMA as such, and initially suspended Spence for a year. The appeal to the NCAA, though, ended up with a ruling that it was in fact a “street drug”, and came with a three game suspension (Orange plus two in fall 2014). Spence’s family asserts that their son had been given the drug unknowingly, and is planning a possible lawsuit against the B1G. Read More

B1G Suspends Noah Spence

Written January 1st, 2014 by MaliBuckeye

Notable in his absence from Orange Bowl prep this week, the reports were that Noah Spence had violated a team rule and was working his way back into the good graces of the team with hopes that he would rejoin the Buckeyes in time to face Clemson.

Today, however, those hopes were dissolved, as it was announced that the sophomore from Pennsylvania has been suspended for three games for violations of conference rules, beginning with this week’s game in Miami.

While the specifics of the infractions are not yet know, it’s speculated that it may not have been one thing but instead a combination of concerns.  In the statement from the University, printed below, special attention is made to Spence’s being Academic All-Conference, raising speculation that the issues may be classroom related.

Here’s the official word from Ohio State:

It has been determined that Ohio State University sophomore Noah Spence has violated a Big Ten Conference rule and he has been suspended for three games, starting with the Discover Orange Bowl this Friday.

Spence’s parents, who did not agree with the rule violation nor the penalty imposed, were assisted by the Ohio State Department of Athletics in exhausting the appeals process that was available to them with the Big Ten.

Spence is an Academic All-Big Ten honoree and an OSU Scholar-Athlete. He will continue course work toward his sociology degree next semester and he will be able to practice with the team this spring, but he will not be eligible to play in a game until Ohio State’s third game of the 2014 season, Sept. 13 vs. Kent State.

The Department of Athletics will have no further comment on this issue.

From the tone of that, it certainly sounds like it’s not just Noah’s parents who are frustrated, but that the University is disappointed with the result of the appeal as well.

Due to numerous factors, we may never know the full extent of the situation. However, we’ll keep you up to date as information becomes available.

*UPDATE- There’s a lot of speculation that this issue was one with an improper dietary supplement, and was detected during the B1G Championship’s mandatory screening.

*UPDATE 2- Not totally related, but it appears that Ohio State will also be without Bradley Roby for the game as well. Curtis Grant is medically cleared and will play.

Wednesday Night Rumble: Anatomy of a statement

Written October 30th, 2013 by Jason

What a show put on by the Buckeyes! We wrap up quite a night in The Shoe as the Buckeyes wallop Penn State and we look forward to the final four games of the regular season. We’ll also take another peak at the BCS and see where the Buckeyes stand nationally and how they can get themselves into the National Championship game. It’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

You can’t always get what you want

Officially all the way back

Officially all the way back

How often do we ask for the Buckeyes to perform to the fullest of their potential and show the world what we all feel they are capable of? We sit and ponder the scenarios of “If this guy can do this and that guy can do that…” in hopes of seeing it all come together. Saturday night was one of those times where it all clicked and the proverbial light bulb turned on.

As a complete unit with Braxton Miller at quarterback and Carlos Hyde at running back, this is only the third game we have seen the Buckeye offense play together. Think about that for a second. After drilling Penn state for 63 points (42 in the first half!) this is an offense that is just now, from a gelling together and games played standpoint, heading into early-mid season form.

The lyrics may say that “you can’t always get what you want”, but I’m here to tell you we are getting what we need. We are getting an offense that is about to hit their high point with four (five including the Big Ten Championship game) games left to play. You couldn’t ask for more.

Anatomy of a force

Braxton Miller is back. I don’t want to hear anything else about it. He is officially the Braxton Miller that was the Heisman frontrunner coming into the season. It took a while and some missed time to get there, but he is here. His feet are back. He looks as tough as ever taking on tacklers. His arm is like a rocket. And the most importantly, he is making great decisions and has his completion percentage is over 70%. Read More

tBBC Fans Interact: Buffalo

Written September 4th, 2013 by WVaBuckeye

This past weekend as the Buckeyes faced the Bulls, we started a new feature here at tBBC. Each week we will feature some hash-tags on twitter and feature your responses to those in a weekly article. While we are at it, we will feature a former Buckeye each week to give their two-cents worth as well and see how you stack up to their thoughts.

This week we’re bringing the “Juice” and featuring Mekka Don! His new Buckeye song hit the skies this past Saturday to a great response in The Shoe.

Juice, Juice, Juice Thank you Mekka!

Juice, Juice, Juice
Thank you Mekka!

#BufTopPlay  Braxton Miller 47 yard TD to Devin Smith. Great throw and great adjustment by Devin.

#BufOMVP Jordan Hall. He ran his butt off today.  Big holes but also showed burst and agility.

#BufDMVP Noah Spence

#BufSTMVP Dontre Wilson. Great kick return!

#BufOUnsung Offensive Line.  They were creating huge holes and giving Braxton (and Kenny) time to throw for the most part.

#BufDUnsung Ryan Shazier.  Despite the injury he was still effective.

#BufMorePT Dontre Wilson, Jalin Marshall, Ezekiel Elliot, Warren Ball. Can’t wait to see what these guys can do!

Silver Bullet Points Works For The Weekend

Written August 17th, 2013 by MaliBuckeye

Quick notes from week two of Ohio State’s pre-season practices. Obvious soundtrack is obvious

Doghoused

Buckeye 411

  • Thank You- Sad news out of Columbus the past few days; Adam Griffin and Jamie Wood have both undergone surgeries that will effectively end their careers with the Buckeyes, it was announced on Thursday. Saturday, Tight End Blake Thomas from Cleveland St. Ignatius also decided to hang up the cleats, after medical examination of a persistent “stinger” injury revealed the possibility of greater neurological damage from future injuries. All three have been valuable parts of the team throughout their tenure, on special teams, on the practice fields, and in the community. We wish Adam, Blake, and Jamie nothing  but the best, and pray for both their recovery and for them to find a way to continue to be involved with the scarlet and gray.
  • Video Evidence- Friday also saw the charges against Bradley Roby reduced to a class B misdemeanor, after security footage from the bar in Bloomington clarified the events in question. According to the initial story, Roby pushed/punched a bouncer after leaving the venue and trying to return; video showed that he was actually roughly escorted from the premises and then shoved several times by the security staff before “lunging” at one of them. It was at this time that he was accosted and handcuffed.  Interestingly enough, the initial police reports indicated that there was no footage available… Hoosiers, man. At any rate, it looks as if this will be deferred to a Diversion program.
  • But… On Saturday, Coach Meyer announced that Roby was suspended for the Buffalo game and perhaps further, dependent upon his meeting certain expectations.
  • In Rod We… Whoops- As we alluded to in Wednesday’s SBP, Rod Smith will also miss the Buffalo game, one that he was slated to start following Carlos Hyde’s suspension. Smith, we’re told, is being punished for a violation of team rules that occurred in January or February.
  • By Committee- Which means that, by default, the Running Back depth chart for Buffalo will be- Jordan Hall, Brionte Dunn, Warren Ball, and Ezekiel Elliott. Given that Dontre Wilson also plays a part in the teams running game, Marcus Hartman sums up the state of affairs nicely:

Hartman RBs

  • For Those Of You Keeping Score At Home- The “suspension count” is as follows: Carlos Hyde (3 games min), Bradley Roby (1 game min), Rod Smith (1 game), Najee Murray (unknown), Marcus Baugh (unknown). Two starting running backs and an All-American corner. Yup, Urban is sure lax on discipline… wonder if he’ll let the team vote on anyone’s punishment?
  • Movin’ Day- A couple of  positional notes, as JT Moore (TE) and Billy Price (C/OG) move from the warm embrace of Coach Vrable’s defensive line to Coach Warriner’s Legion of Doom. The LoD will be anchored on the right side by Taylor Decker, who’s wowed during spring camp.
  • Getting Defensive- Ryan Shazier ran a 4.35; 5 B1G Quarterbacks have filed for restraining orders. Joe Burger was running with the first team defense on Saturday, and not Josh Perry, which was a bit of a surprise. Noah Spence is up from 227 to 255, and is a bad man.
  • Offensive Notes- Braxton’s leadership continues to draw praise from players and coaches alike. Devin Smith has really stepped up, and was MVP of today’s scrimmage.
  • “Newest” Buckeyes- Here’s who’s lost their black stripes as of today: Joe Ramstetter, Dontre Wilson, Mike Mitchell, Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, Cam Burrows, Aaron Mawhirter, Billy Price, and Michael Hill. The rookies have started a cool new tradition- they’re taking the stripes (once removed), and linking them into a chain to indicate their connection to each other.
  • Who Does Number Two Work For? Well, if you believe Patrick, it works for Ohio State, who find themselves in that slot in the first AP poll of the season.

Wednesday Night Rumble: Dynamic Duo

Written April 17th, 2013 by Jason

The Scarlet and Grey game for 2013 is in the books. Who stood out? Who can change the game? It’s Wednesday, let’s rumble!

Scarlet and Grey 2013

Remember back around the last week of December and on through New Year’s when everyone was upset and moaning about the Buckeyes not being bowl eligible? Seems like a long time ago, doesn’t it? I told you time would fly by, and here we are with summer camp and the 2013 season opener as the next events on the Ohio State football schedule. Game-of-Thrones

Like a lot of you I wasn’t able to logon to the Big Ten Network’s live stream of the game or listen to the radio play-by-play online. I followed along on twitter for some of the pregame and a little bit of the first quarter and decided to wait it out and stay away from it until the BTN broadcast at 7 on Saturday night. Then I didn’t even have a chance to see it at 7. Good thing for DVR’s. Read More
