Seal_of_the_Ohio_State_UniversityIt is May and now that Ohio State has switched to semester, that means the school year is winding down; of course back in the day of trimesters we’d still be in school for another month. That means that students are studying for finals, seniors are hunting for jobs and preparing to graduate, coaches are recruiting, and the university is handing out faculty awards. While student-athletes and coaches are used to getting attention for almost everything they do, OSU faculty members are often overlooked for the work they do in making Ohio State one of the top universities in the world. Fortunately the annual faculty awards do at least a little to help give these people the attention they deserve.

First and foremost, the job of a university is to educate students and that isn’t possible without the hardwork and dedication to teaching from the faculty. While many people think it is easy to just stand up in front of a class and lecture, it takes a lot of time and effort to prepare lectures, homework assignments, exams, and of course help students during office hours. For many faculty, just giving normal lectures isn’t enough, instead these dedicated men and women spend numerous more hours introducing innovative teaching and learning techniques to their classroom in order to help student learn as much as possible. Each year, the best of the best among these faculty are honored with the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching. Faculty are nominated by their students, both current and former, and the winners of the award are chosen by a committee of students, faculty, and alumni. In addition to the honor and recognition for their outstanding work, the recipients receive a $3,000 cash award and a $1,200 increase in their salary. This year’s recipients are Martin Robert Feinberg from the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Steven James Joyce who teaches in the department of Germanic Languages and Literature at OSU’s Mansfield campus, Trevon D. Logan of the Department of Economics, Warren Benson McCorkle Jr of the Department of English at OSU Marion, Donald O. Mutti of the College of Optometry, Jennifer E. Schlueter of the Department of Theatre, Robert Anthony Siston of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Mazeika Sulliva of the School of Enivornment and Natural Resources, Tatiana Suspitsyna of the Department of Educational Studies, and Todd Alan Thompson of the Department of Astronomy.
