The Week That Were: 11.26.11

Written November 27th, 2011 by MaliBuckeye

Lots of holiday options for this week’s soundtrack, but I’m that guy that thinks Christmas music should be banned until at least December. So, given all of the rumors of this past week and the results from yesterday’s Ohio State game, the R&B genius of Sam And Dave make a return as we give thanks and look to the future.

Ah, Thanksgiving weekend. When thoughts turn to leftover turkey and pie and… football. While the NFL takes front stage on Thursday, and even with the “exciting news” that the NBA is “back, baby!!!”, this weekend was all about the college game. It’s the weekend that puts the best of both worlds together- family and friends gathering together to break bread and then scream at each other because someone had to go to that school just to be different.

And we got three days of amazing games, starting with the end of an era. Because of future schedule issues between the SEC bound aTm and the Big Integer anchor Texas Longhorns, the Turkey Day Tradition saw its last episode end in a classic fashion. This was supposed to be THE year for the Aggies, but failure after failure on their farewell tour led to a mentality where the UT game was a must win to maintain dignity before heading to the 4-8 seasons that SEC play was sure to bring.

Texas’ struggles are also well known (and well documented), and there was a contingent of Longhorn faithful who were as tired of their staff’s decisions regarding offensive and defensive play as some Ohio State faithful have been as of late.  For this to end the way that it did highlights the beauty of the rivalry and the reason that college football is the heart of the lives of so many:

Silver Bullet Points Thinks Pink

Written November 16th, 2011 by MaliBuckeye

Initially, this week was supposed to be “POPS”- Pink Out Penn State for Breast Cancer Awareness.  While we’ve not heard anything more about that since things changed in Happy Valley, we’re more than glad to give our support. You know… given the circumstances.

This Week's Wallpaper from Kevin Dearth

Buckeye 411

  • Walking Wounded- It seems as if the injuries are piling up for the Buckeyes. Andrew Sweat will miss Senior Day (will dress, but not participate) with the aftereffects of a concussion, meaning Ryan Shazier will get his first start.  Although he’s listed as the starter on the depth chart, Big Hank will more than likely not play this Saturday- although the injury is not deemed season ending.  JB Shugarts might play, as he recovers from a knee issue; he practiced on Tuesday, but is trying to take it easy. Don’t be surprised if Ohio State looks to get someone else to false start against PSU. Philly Brown is also dinged up from last week’s prep, and Boom mentioned that he re-tweaked his ankle, but is doing fine and plans to play.
  • Fickell Speaks- As always, the message is “We control what we can control, and learn from what happens”.  In reflecting on some of the struggles that the team has had recently, Fickell commented that you have to play the hand that you’re dealt, and that life isn’t always fair.
  • We Can Has WR? This week should mark the beginning of DeVier Posey’s two/three game season, barring some arbitrary shenanigans from Indianapolis. When asked about his presence on Gameday, Coach Fickell responded that much of it would depend on how Posey progressed at practice and if Philly was healthy.  He did say, though, that he hopes DeVier gives the offense a spark similar to the one Boom provided against Illinois. So, yeah- he’s playing. Read More

The Week That Were: 10.22.11

There are lots of options for today’s soundtrack, but I’m going with this one for reasons that should be clear later.

Apologies for the tardiness of this week’s recap…  you say “bye week”, I say “rock climbing trip to the beach“. So, yeah… I didn’t get to see what might be the play of the season in the B1G. If you’re like me and have been living under or on a rock, a) I’m sorry and b) here’s how it went down:

The game was a great one for college football fans, and for the conference overall… for the national audience to see such a back and forth game between two top teams can’t help but counteract the “B1G And Slow” meme that seems to linger no matter the quality of the programs within the conference. Are you not Entertained? Illinois

Written October 16th, 2011 by Eric

The Buckeyes managed to put together a decent 17-7 win on the strength of some great defensive play, and some solid running from the offense.

Seriously, who needs a passing game? It’s not like anyone really asked for it anyway.

Mali:

Boom Herron ran over the Illinois defense.

Lower The Boom. I don’t think the balance was quite right, but you simply cannot argue with 23 carries for 114 yards and a touchdown for his first appearance after suspension. It would have been nice to see a bit more Carlos Hyde in this one, but I’ll take a 100 yard rusher and a win any day.

Solomon’s Wisdom. We got him involved, and he was involved quite a bit. Unfortunately, he wasn’t involved in good ways from what we could see. Clearly Thomas was suffering from the rust.

No Injuries. The jury is still out on Travis Howard, who was injured during his interception return. That may be the only significant injury of the day.

Smooth Jazz. OSU was never in control enough to risk putting any other quarterback in the game, nor were they forced to do so due to injury or poor play. Braxton Miller got the job done and did everything that was necessary to net the win.

NFS. Well, apparently abbreviating it managed to keep JB Shugarts from false starting! That’s something! Too bad we had 2 or 3 other flags for it too…

tBBC Postgame Show: Illinois

Written October 15th, 2011 by Eric

Eric is joined by Malibuckeye, Joe Dexter and Michael of Our Honor Defend to discuss the Ohio State 17-7 win over Illinois today in Urbana-Champaign. They focus on the excellent running game displayed by Boom Herron, Jordan Hall and Carlos Hyde (who retracted the twitter statement discussed in this podcast after we recroded). We also discuss the non-existent passing game, and the state of Fickell and Bollman’s employment at Ohio State.

All this and more – including some allusion to the upcoming Basketball Season – on the latest BBC Postgame Show!

No Passing Fancy: Ohio State beats Illinois 17-7

Written October 15th, 2011 by Joe Dexter

Coming into Saturday’s action against the Illinois Fighting Illini, Buckeyes fans knew that it was going to take an ugly game for the Buckeyes to win. Nobody would of ever guessed it would of been that big of a possession and turnover battle with just one completed pass for the Buckeyes all afternoon long.

Wait, that’s right. Jim Bollman is the Buckeyes Offensive Coordinator. Nothing at this point should be surprising on the offensive side of the football.

The Buckeyes got the ball first and quickly got the running game going. Daniel “Boom” Herron got the start, and early used his patientce alongside fellow running back Jordan Hall to put together a methodical drive out of the I formation. After 9 straight running plays for 45 yards, Drew Basil was called upon to put the first points on board, by making his 8th straight field goal from 43 yards out as he played the wind with the hook to make it 3-0.

The rest of the first quarter would be back and forth with little or no forward progress from either team. After forcing a three and out on the opening drive for the Illini, The Buckeyes were shut out on their second attempt to get on the scoreboard. After two short runs and a Whitney Mercilus sack of Braxton Miller, The Buckeye defense took the field and got the football back. Illinois ended the first with the ball, gaining their first true offensive momentum into the second. After a solid catch by A.J. Jenkins down the sideline for 21 yards to the Ohio State 38, the Illini worked into a 4th down and 4 situation, where Ron Zook had his special teams pooch the football inside the 10 yard line.

What do you Want to see on Saturday? Illinois Edition

Written October 14th, 2011 by Eric

The Buckeyes travel to Urbana-Champaign this weekend to take on the undefeated Fighting Zookers Illini.  What do the guys here at the BBC want to see this weekend?

Mali:

It's time for this again.

Lower The Boom. I don’t know if it means special teams or in the backfield, but Daniel Herron has waited long enough. The challenge will be in finding out how to balance his touches with Jordan and Carlos, both of whom have demonstrated amazing persistence and talent over the past half season. Wishbone, anyone?

Solomon’s Wisdom. I know he’s recovering from leg injury, but the last time we saw him was making a game saving INT in the Sugar Bowl That Supposedly Didn’t Happen. With Williams out for the year, it’s time to get him involved.

No Injuries. Please… play hard, but stay healthy.

Smooth Jazz. Kenny G, come on down. This would either mean that Ohio State has the game in control or that Braxton is getting a breather (not injured, see above) and he’s getting valuable backup time. Joe B, we love you, but it’s time to move on. It’s not you, it’s us.

NFS. Maybe if I abbreviate it. Ed. – Yea, right. Keep dreaming.
